Vikings sail past Marauders for sweep

SIOUX FALLS, SD – Searching for their first conference win of the season, the University of Mary baseball team was swept on the road at Augustana University. Despite three hits on the day by the Marauders Andrew Beyer and Lane Huck, Mary was swept 10-0 and 13-1 by the Vikings.

Fighting from behind all day, the Marauders couldn't match the Vikings firepower.

Augie scored a single run in the bottom of the first in the opening game and pulled away with three in the third, capped by a 2-run home run from Kris Ashland. It was the first of two in the game for the Vikings designated hitter.

The Vikings added one more run in the fifth before doubling their lead with five in the sixth. With the help of four Marauders errors, only four of Augie's ten runs were earned.

Beyer finished 2-for-3 to lead the Mary offense. Huck and Daulton Sauce also added hits.

Despite a solid effort, Nicholas Stobbe suffered the loss. The senior righty gave up just three earned runs on five hits and a walk in five innings. Stobbe struck out four.

Ashland was 3-for-3 with two home runs, two runs scored and five RBIs. Riley Johnson added three hits, scored three times and drone in one run.

Jacob Blank struck out 13 and allowed four hits and a walk in pitching a complete game shutout for the Vikings.

Mary looked to take its first lead in the opening inning of the second game but couldn't push across a run. Beyer singled, stole second and went to third on an infield hit from Huck but failed to score.

The Vikings had no problems plating runs in the bottom of the first, scoring seven times on seven hits. A 3-run double by Lucas Barry was the key blow.

The Marauders broke through with a single run in the second. After Austen DuBriel earned a 1-out walk and moved to third on a Seth Sivertson single, DuBriel scored on a Seth Meide base hit to left.

Augie matched the Marauders run in the bottom of two, tacked on a single run in the third and posted a pair of runs in both the fourth and sixth innings.

Huck and Meide both had a pair of hits for Mary in the second game. Beyer added a hit and a walk.

Kenny Slominski tossed 1.1 innings of scoreless and hitless innings for Mary.

Johnson posted another three hits in the second game, scoring once and driving in two. Carter Wevik also had three hits, scored once and drove in two runs. Lucas drove in three runs and scored three times.

The Marauders (4-11 overall, 0-6 Northern Sun) and the Vikings (11-10, 5-1) conclude their four-game set on Sunday, March 26, at noon.
