Stobbe complete game can't prevent Mavericks sweep of Marauders

MINNETONKA, MN – Nicholas Stobbe pitched a complete game in the Northern Sun season opener for the University of Mary, a 3-0 loss to projected conference champion Minnesota State University. The Mavericks completed the day's doubleheader sweep with a 6-1 win over the Marauders in the second game.

GAME 1: Mavericks 3 Marauders 0
Making his third start of the season, the senior righthander allowed three runs on six hits. He struck out seven and didn't walk a batter.

The Mavericks scored quickly, posting a pair of runs in the bottom of the first inning. A wild pitch plated the first run before a run-scoring single by Noah Bluth.

Brody Rodning kept the Mary bats in check all game, allowing two hits and two walks in a seven-inning complete game. Rodning also struck out eight.

Both Marauders walks came in the third inning but one of the runners was picked off attempting to reach third.

Darius Barlas ripped a two-out triple in the fifth but was left on base.

Mary's final scoring opportunity came in the sixth inning. Andrew Beyer reached on a bunt single but was thrown out attempting to steal second on a strike out-throw out double play.

GAME 2: Mavericks 6 Marauders 1
The Marauders jumped out to their first lead of the day in the second inning of game two.

Chris Scott led off with a single and took second on an error. After Lane Huck singled to right to move Scott to third, the sophomore right fielder scored on a Connor Doll sacrifice bunt.

The lead was short-lived as the Mavericks tallied twice in the bottom of the inning on a two-run double by Tommy McDonald. Single runs in both the third and the fourth innings jumped the Minnesota State lead to 4-1. Two walks and a Marauders error increased the Mavericks lead to 6-1 after six innings.

Barlas led the Marauders in hits with two, including a double. Beyer, Scott, Huck and Nick McCann produced the other hits for Mary.

Dylan Dresel had two hits, Bluth scored twice and McDonald had three RBIs and two hits.

After throwing nine shutout innings of relief to start the year, Travis Stevens allowed four runs in four innings. He gave up just five hits, no walks, and struck out one. Alec DeMaria struck out six in 3.1 innings, allowing three hits and two unearned runs.

Dalton Roach was dominating on the mound for the Mavericks, striking out 14 Marauders in eight innings. He allowed five hits and an unearned run.
