Big innings haunt Marauders on second day of Desert Stinger

LAS VEGAS – In search of their first win of the young season, the University of Mary softball team came up short on the second day of the Desert Stinger tournament in Las Vegas. After dropping a pair of games the day before, Mary posted a 15-2 loss to tournament host MSU Billings and fell short 11-2 to Stanislaus State.

Closer than the final score indicated, the Marauders stayed within striking distance of the Yellowjackets throughout the opener. After keeping MSUB off the board in the first inning, Marauders starting pitcher Taylor Lara allowed just single runs in the second and third innings and two in the fourth.

Mary's all-conference slugger Taylor Mendez crushed her first home run of the season to lead off the fourth and cut the deficit to 4-1. It was the 40th homer of Mendez's stellar career.

The Yellowjackets responded immediately with a single run in the fifth and the Marauders matched it in the sixth. Mendez was hit by a pitch to lead off the inning, moved to second on a wild pitch and took third on a fly out to right. Madison McGonigal followed with a single down the right field line to score Mendez and pull Mary within 5-2.

The Marauders hopes for a rally were quickly submerged as the Yellowjackets exploded for 10 runs in the sixth, keyed by a pair of 2-run home runs.

McGonigal finished the game 2-for-3 with an RBI. Mendez was 1-for-2 with two runs scored, a home run and an RBI.

Kelsey Devlin and Cameron Cassinelli both had three hits for MSUB.

The opponent scoring barrage continued immediately against Stanislaus State as the Warriors plated eight runs in the top of the first inning. Assisted by four errors, six of the SSU runs were unearned.

Madison Jahner came aboard in the second inning and controlled the Warriors offense the rest of the way, allowing a single run in the third and two in the seventh. The freshman gave up three runs on seven hits in six innings of relief.

Mary scored single runs in the first and third innings. McGongal walked and scored the first Marauders run on an error. Later freshman Rebekkah Keller singled and scored on a sacrifice fly off the bat of Olivia Janssen.

Keller finished the game with two of Mary's five hits.

Lia Tom drove in three runs for the Warriors and Kristin Borst had 11 strikeouts in the game.

Mary closes out the Desert Stinger against Central Washington on Sunday, Feb. 5.
