BISMARCK, ND – In possibly his final appearance at the McDowell Activity Center, University of Mary guard
Damonta Henry made the night memorable. The Chicago, IL, native dropped career-highs for points and three-pointers on the University of Minnesota Duluth in an 81-66 Marauders win over the Bulldogs.
A weekend sweep of the St. Cloud State Huskies and the Bulldogs, plus losses by both Minot State University and Bemidji State University, moves Mary alone into fourth place in the Northern Sun North Division with two games remaining in the regular season. The top four teams in the NSIC North and South host first round games in the conference tournament.
The regular season concludes next week for the Marauders with games at Minnesota Crookston and BSU.
One of six Marauders seniors honored before the game, Henry drained seven treys and scored 27 points to lead the Mary efforts. He was 7-of-13 behind the arc and 10-of-18 overall and added three assists.
Fellow Illinois native and senior
Bryan Jefferson added 20 points, four rebounds and three assists. The All-NSIC forward from Aurora was 8-of-11 from the floor and hit all four free throw attempts.
The Marauders four other seniors also played key rolls in the win.
Pat Thomas filled the stat page with six points, six assists, three steals and eight rebounds.
Erron Collins came off the bench to hit all three of his shots from behind the arc and scored nine points. He also had two steals.
Rickey Suggs and
Isaac Lindquist both had four points and three rebounds and anchored a defense that limited UMD to 16 points in the paint and a shooting percentage of 39.3 percent.
While UMD struggled to score, Mary had no such issues. One night after putting 99 on SCSU, the Marauders shot 56.1 percent for the game and hit 12-of-24 treys.
The Marauders led from start to finish. Henry hit a trey to start the game. After UMD's Luke Harris hit a layup, a
Pat Thomas steal led to a Jefferson break-away dunk and the Marauders were off to the races. Mary led 13-2 early and held a 17-point advantage at intermission. The Bulldogs pulled no closer than within 12 points to the Marauders in the second half.
Harris led UMD with 15 points. Cody Tomlinson came off the bench to add 14.
Mary improves to 11-15 overall and 9-11 in the NSIC. UMD falls to 4-22 and 3-17.
