BISMARCK, ND – A big second half broke open a close contest and provided the University of Mary women's basketball team their third straight win.
Lauren Rotunda posted a double double and led all players in points and assists as the Marauders swept past visiting Presentation College 82-51 in a non-conference contest.
Rotunda scored a season-high 21 points and hauled down 10 rebounds. Seemingly always making the right decision, the sophomore guard had seven assists and missed just one of her seven field goal attempts. She was 4-of-5 behind the arc and went 5-of-6 at the free throw line.
Gabbie Bohl and
Dani Williams also had strong nights for the Marauders. Bohl made 7-of-8 field goals and scored 18 points. Williams was 3-of-5 on 3-pointers and scored 17 points. In her last two games Williams is a combined 9-of-14 on trey attempts.
"
Lauren Rotunda put together another strong performance for us," said Marauders head coach
Rick Neumann. "She had a lot of energy and put us in the right positions all night.
"
Dani Williams also continued her outstanding play. Moving her to the wing this season has really showcased her offensive abilities. She's shooting the ball with confidence and will be difficult for teams to stop."
Leading by as many as 15 in the opening half, the Marauders saw the Saints close within 40-34 on a steal and a layup by Allison Cox.
That basket by Presentation set UMary back on track. Keyed by Rotunda, the Marauders ripped off 14 straight points. She scored seven of the points, had one assist, a steal and two defensive rebounds. Eventually a 25-4 run, the Marauders overwhelmed the smaller Saints 25-9 in the third quarter and cruised to the win.
Cassie Askvig chipped in eight points and a game-high 12 rebounds. She also had five assists.
Christal Hearn added six points and three steals off the bench.
Cox led the Saints with 19 points and four rebounds.
The Marauders dominated the boards, outrebounding the Saints 47-14. Both teams hit 11 3-pointers but UMary held the edge in overall shooting percentage 50.9 percent to 36 percent.
UMary next opens Northern Sun conference play with a visit to Minot State University on Saturday, Nov. 25, before returning home to face Yellowstone Christian College on Tuesday, Nov. 28.
