Olson, Randall close out careers with strong showing in loss to Mavericks

BISMARCK, ND – The University of Mary volleyball team said goodbye to their four seniors in a high-energy match. With both offenses clicking, visiting Minnesota State University swept UMary 3-0 (28-26, 25-21, 25-21) in a heartbreaker for the Marauders.

Lauren Randall led the Marauders with 14 kills. The Marauders NCAA era all-time kills leader hit .286 for the match, making just four attack errors. The All-Northern Sun performer added six digs and two block assists.

Fellow senior Katelyn Olson contributed in all facets of the game. The Fargo, ND, native posted 39 assists, totaled four kills, chipped in two aces, dug nine balls and assisted on two blocks. Freddie Campbell, also playing in her final contest for UMary, terminated five balls and assisted on two blocks.

Anna Nietfeld posted eights for both kills and digs, finalizing points from a variety of spots on the floor. Jody Heidel paced UMary with ten digs and added four assists.

The Mavericks hit .350 on the night, committing just nine attack errors with 44 kills. The Marauders exceeded the visitor's total in kills with 45 but UMary also misfired 15 times.

Fighting from behind all day, the Marauders overcame a 22-17 deficit to take a 26-25 lead. The 9-3 run featured kills by five players, including a pair by Randall and Natalia Cruz. Unable to get their last-needed points, the Marauders saw the Mavericks score three straight to claim the opener 28-26.

Set two proved similar but UMary couldn't close the deficit. After taking a brief 9-7 lead, the Marauders slowly fell behind in a 25-21 second set loss.

Refusing to fade, the Marauders rallied from seven back to close to 20-19. After a Randall kill pulled UMary within 22-21, a service error and back-to-back kills for the Mavericks ended the Marauders season.

UMary finishes 2017 with a mark of 8-21 overall and 4-16 in the NSIC. Minnesota State is 15-13 and 9-11.
