Marathon match ends in disappointment as Marauders fall in five to Huskies

ST. CLOUD, MN – A marathon match with a heartbreaking finish, the University of Mary lost a five-set contest by the narrowest of margins. Despite 21 kills and a season-high in digs from Lauren Randall, the visiting Marauders fell 3-2 (25-17, 24-26, 26-24, 14-25, 15-13) to St. Cloud State University.

After a slow start in the opening set, the Marauders (5-16 overall, 1-11 Northern Sun) built a 21-16 lead in the second set. Unable to hold the Huskies (13-9, 5-7) at bay, the Marauders broke a 24-24 tie on a kill by Randall before evening the night at one set each when SCSU was called for a ball-handling error.

In the third set, the Marauders again pulled ahead 21-16. This time UMary was unable to hold off SCSU. Grabbing a 24-23 advantage on an SCSU service error, the Marauders couldn't find one last point and fell 26-24.

Needing a win in the fourth set to stay alive in the match, the Marauders put together their best set of the night, hitting .312 to a .105 attack percentage for the Huskies. Building an 18-8 lead after a Katelyn Olson kill, the Marauders closed the fourth set on consecutive kills by Katja Berge, Natalia Cruz and Freddie Campbell.

In the decisive fifth set, three straight kills by Erin Navratil pushed the Huskies in front 9-5. Digging deep, the Marauders went on a 6-2 run and pulled even 11-11 on a kill by Cruz. With both teams trading points, a kill by Berge pulled UMary even at 12-12 and a Cruz kill knotted the score at 13-13. SCSU eventually outlasted UMary, scoring the decisive two points on a Abby Templin kill and a block of an attack by Cruz.

Randall paired 21 kills with 18 digs, her 12th double double of the year. The senior outside hitter also had three aces. Cruz picked up her second double double with 12 kills and 16 digs. No other Marauder had more than four kills.

Amanda Lopes distributed 40 assists and had three kills and 13 digs. Geovana Almeida led the Marauders with 19 of the team's 87 digs. Jody Heidel had 15 digs.

Templin paced SCSU with 14 kills. Becca Gruber added 12 kills.

SCSU held a slight .176-.152 edge in hitting percentage but held a large 12-5 advantage in blocks, probably the biggest difference between the two teams on the night.

The Marauders close the weekend at 5th-ranked University of Minnesota Duluth on Saturday, Oct. 22, at 4 pm.
