BISMARCK, ND –
Hannah Larson ripped down a career-high 16 rebounds and registered her fifth double double of the season but the University of Mary senior forward's efforts couldn't prevent the hard-charging University of Minnesota Crookston Golden Eagles from rallying for a 80-71 road win over the Marauders.
Mary overcame a double digit deficit to take a 66-58 lead over Minnesota Crookston with nearly six minutes remaining behind a 33-14 run, featuring eight points from Larson and six from
Gabbie Bohl.
Seemingly in command and scoring both inside and out, the Marauders (9-12 overall, 4-9 Northern Sun) were unable to hold off the Golden Eagles (5-12, 5-8) down the stretch.
After a Kelsey Stinson 3-pointer tied the game for UMC at 68-68,
Dani Williams put Mary back in front on a layup with 2:53 remaining. It would be the last basket of the night for the Marauders, who missed their last seven shots and went 1-for-2 at the free throw line.
Michaela Noga tied the game at 70-70 on a jumper before Steph McWilliams hit two free throws and Alison Hughes a trey as UMC surged ahead 75-70. Bohl pulled Mary within 75-71 on a free throw with 37 seconds left but couldn't get any shots to fall. Noga added four free throws in the final 32 seconds and Isieoma Odor one to secure the Golden Eagles fifth straight win over the Marauders.
Held without a rebound in her last game, Larson more than made up for that with her game-high 16 boards. She also tied for the team lead with 19 points and added five assists. The Bismarck, ND, native was 5-of-6 at the free throw line.
Bohl also had 19 points. The redshirt freshman was 8-of-12 from the field and finished 3-of-4 at the line before fouling out of the game in the closing seconds. Williams paired 10 points and three steals and three assists and
Lauren Rotunda registered 11 points and seven rebounds.
Allison Hughes led all players with 20 points for UMC. She was 6-for-11 on treys. Noga added 16 points and eight assists and Odor posted 13 points.
Mary held a 46-26 edge in points in the paint and a 20-10 advantage in 2
nd chance points. UMC made up for both with volume shooting from the outside and outscoring the Marauders 19-8 on points off turnovers.
UMC was 11-for 27 on treys to Mary's 4-for-24 effort. The Marauders took 13 more shots but finished 29-of-70 from the field while the Golden Eagles connected on 27-of-57 shots.
Mary next hosts Bemidji State on Saturday, Jan. 21, at 4 pm.
