Bulldogs bounce Marauders in opener, game two suspended after five innings

DULUTH, Minn. – On the final weekend of the season, the last place University of Mary's hopes of upsetting conference-leading University of Minnesota Duluth were dashed, at least for a day. The Bulldogs opened the four-game set with a 9-2 lead in the opener.

After a three-hour delay due to rain and lightning, game two was suspended after five innings with UMD leading U-Mary 10-6.

Friday's second game will be concluded on Saturday beginning at 11 a.m. The two teams will then play a pair of seven inning doubleheaders, instead of one seven and one nine inning game.

One of the top offensive teams in the Northern Sun, the Bulldogs slowly built their lead inning after inning, scoring in each of the first three and in five of six. In every inning but the fourth UMD posted at least three hits on their way to a total of 17 in the game.

UMD scored twice in the first and three times in the second and once in the third to build a 6-0 lead.

Limited to two hits in the first four innings, an infield single and a stolen base by Mason Schiff in the fifth led to the Marauders first run. With two outs, Tom Imholte singled to right, scoring Schiff and shaving the Bulldogs lead to 6-1. UMD responded immediately with two more runs in the bottom of the inning.

Refusing to go away, the Marauders scored their final run of the game in the sixth. Connor Doll doubled down the left field line with two outs and scored on a Drew Feuerbach single to right. Once again, though, the Bulldogs plated one more run in the home half of the sixth to close the scoring.

Making his last collegiate start, senior lefthander McKeon Meyhoff tossed a complete game for the Marauders. In six innings the U-Mary baseball career leading in innings pitched and strikeouts struck out four and walked two.

Doll led the Marauders with two hits – including a double - and a run scored. Imholte and Feuerbach both drove in runs.

Kyle Comer and Marco Lucarelli both had three hits for UMD. Comer also drove in two runs and Lucarelli scored twice. Five UMD hitters had two hits in the game. Eric Yachinich had two hits and three RBIs.

After a three hour delay due to lighting and the weather, the Marauders posted three runs in the top of the first of game two for their first lead of the day. Unwilling to play from behind, the Bulldogs scored four in the first inning and five in the second for a 9-3 lead.

Unwilling to fade away, the Marauders scored three in the fourth.

Through five innings, Jason Shaul is 2-for-3 with a run scored and three runs batted in. Feuerbach has two RBIs.
