WINTER HAVEN, Fla. – Big innings brought down the University of Mary baseball team on the final day of the Marauders spring trip to Florida. Gannon University blistered U-Mary for 12 extra base hits as the Knights swept the Marauders 14-3 and 15-3 in a non-conference doubleheader.
In the opener, the Knights (10-3 overall) scored twice in the first but the Marauders (2-8) immediately responded. Leading off for the home team, U-Mary freshman right fielder
Chris Scott and senior left fielder
Jason Shaul hit back-to-back singles. Ground outs by
Travis Stevens and
Brad Meyer drove in Scott and Shaul, respectively, and the game was knotted 2-2 after one inning.
The Knights broke the game open with five runs in the third inning and six in the fourth. Mark DeVita provided a big blow in both innings, hitting a run-scoring triple in the third and an RBI double in the fourth.
Six different Marauders had hits in the opener and three others drove in a single run each. Isaac Saad threw one scoreless inning, striking out two hitters.
Brody Burnett tossed two scoreless innings.
Davita led the 16 hit Knights attack with four hits, three runs, two RBIs, two doubles and a triple in five at bats.
Following a similar game plan in game two, Gannon scored twice in the first and one in the second before plating eight runs in the third. Chris Beer led off the third with a double and scored on a double by Nate Carty. Beer later hit a three-run double in the inning. The Knights shortstop finished the game 3-for-4 with two doubles, three runs scored and four RBIs.
The Marauders scored all three runs in the sixth as A.J. Scheafbauer and
