BISMARCK, N.D. – Nine University of Mary hurlers combined to strike out 12 hitters and allow just four hits and no earned runs in the Marauders home opener. Despite the marvelous pitching line, U-Mary was unable to take advantage of offensive opportunities in a 3-2 loss to Dickinson State University.
Following a two-week layoff with the Northern Sun season set to start on Thursday, the Marauders (2-10) rolled out a new pitcher every inning. The strategy nearly worked to perfection as the squad allowed just four hits and no walks.
The Marauders jumped on the scoreboard first, scoring single runs in both the first and second innings.
Tom Imholte led off the game with a single through the left side of the infield, took second on a walk to
Jason Shaul and captured third when
Brad Meyer singled to center to load the bases.
Lane Huck then jumped on the first pitch and sent a fly ball to right field deep enough to score Imholte for the only run U-Mary tallied in the opening stanza.
In the bottom of the second,
Mason Schiff led off with a single, advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by
Seth Meide and scored on a single through the right side by
Andrew Beyer, doubling the U-Mary advantage to 2-0.
Continuing to leave runners in scoring position in the third and fourth inning, the Marauders left to door open for the Blue Hawks (13-15) to get into the game and DSU took advantage in the fifth.
Without a ball leaving the infield, DSU loaded the bases as its first three hitters reached base on three straight defensive errors by U-Mary. Sensing the opportunity for a big inning, a Nathan Demarais fielder's choice started the scoring. Jake Young and Sagan Osborne followed with run-scoring singles up the middle and the Blue Hawks snagged a 3-2 lead.
Blue Hawks starting pitcher Tony Roberts continued to live dangerously, allowing two hits in the sixth and stranding two more Marauders base-runners in the seventh. Jonathan Koessl pitched a perfect eighth inning for DSU to set up a dramatic ninth inning.
Needing one run to extend the game or two to win, Imholte walked and Shaul was hit by a pitch with one out in the ninth. A strikeout for the second out ensued but a wild pitch advanced both runners into scoring position. With hopes of a game-winning base hit, the game instead ended on a strike out.
Three Marauders had two hits in the game. Meyer was 2-for-5 while Schiff and Fitch both going 2-for-4. Schiff scored a run and Beyer added a double and a run scored.
Four Marauders struck out two Blue Hawks hitters in a single inning of work:
Zach Steckler,
Travis Holte,
Ryo Takenaka and Clay Bassingthwaithe.
Following a site reversal due to anticipated weekend rain in South Dakota, the Marauders next play a pair of double headers against the University of Sioux Falls on March 24-25 at Municipal Ballpark in Bismarck, N.D. Thursday's twin bill begins at 3 p.m. and Friday's start time is 10 a.m.
