DULUTH, MN – For the third time this season, the University of Mary's
Zack Graves and
Connor Graves both scored touchdowns in the same game. Despite the scoring contribution from the two brothers, the Marauders found themselves overwhelmed by the 18
th ranked University of Minnesota Duluth in a 75-14 road loss to the Bulldogs.
The Marauders (1-9 overall and NSIC / 1-5 NSIC North) contributed mightily to the Bulldogs (9-1 overall and NSIC / 6-0 NSIC North) scoring binge by turning the ball over seven times, a season-high. Mary lost five fumbles and threw two interceptions. UMD turned five of the turnovers into touchdowns. Entering the game the Marauders were among the nation's better teams in holding onto the ball. Mary had lost just five fumbles and committed only 13 turnovers total in the first nine games of the season.
Beau Bofferding registered the first two touchdowns of the game for the Bulldogs, running in from 3 yards out to end UMD's first possession of the game. He went 79 yards to score the next time the Bulldogs possessed the ball. UMD posted 26 points in the first quarter and held a 40-0 lead with 9:19 left in the opening half.
The Marauders scored both their touchdowns in the second quarter.
Zack Graves caught a 4-yard scoring pass from
Nick McCann with 4:16 remaining in the half. The touchdown capped a massive 11-play 79-yard drive for Mary that featured an 11-yard run by
Zack Graves, a 13-yard run by
Paul Guptill and two personal foul penalties on the Bulldogs.
Connor Graves got into the scoring act after the Bulldogs next touchdown. The senior slotback took the ensuing kickoff at the Mary 11-yard line and returned the ball 89 yards for his first career special teams touchdown with 1:37 left before intermission.
The Marauders posted 14 first downs and 249 yards of offense, including 152 on the ground. The Bulldogs had 32 first downs, ran for 349 yards and passed for 261 to total 610 yards of offense.
Zack Graves ran for 62 yards and caught three passes for 20 yards and a touchdown.
Connor Graves carried the ball two times for 27 yards, caught a pair of passes for 16 yards and returned eight kicks for 200 yards.
Defensively
Danielle Whitaker led the Marauders with seven tackles. The senior also broke up a pass.
Cyrano Rayfield added seven tackles, including 1.5 for loss.
Bofferding ran for 109 yards and two scores on nine carried to pace UMD. He also returned three kicks for 113 yards. Jaleen Jones added 70 yards and two scores and Bryce Heim had 53 yards and two touchdowns on the ground. Drew Bauer completed 13-of-17 passes for 173 yards and three scores.
The 75 points is the most ever allowed by the Marauders. The previous high was 65 by Northern State University in 2012.
The Marauders close out the 2016 season at Minot State University on Saturday, Nov. 12, in the Battle for the Big Lake.
