SBU Classic host Bearcats edge past Marauders 76-72

BOLIVAR, MO – Damota Henry led the University of Mary in scoring for a second straight game and Bryan Jefferson and Ricky Suggs just missed double doubles but the University of Mary fell short against Southwest Baptist University, host of the SBU Classic, 76-72.

Coming off a 23 point performance against Lincoln in the season opener, Henry contributed 15 points against the Bearcats before fouling out. He hit three treys in the game but finished 5-for-14 overall from the floor. Jefferson contributed 14 points and nine rebounds plus three assists. Suggs made 6-of-9 shots off the bench to score 14 points. The senior also had eight rebounds.

The Marauders overcame a double-digit deficit to take a 34-33 lead at intermission. Suggs scored the first seven points in a 14-3 run and Isaac Lindquist the last four to give Mary a halftime lead for the second straight day.

But just like the day before in a loss to Lincoln, the Marauders were outscored in the second half. After Luke Scott hit a trey to tie the game at 51-51, the Bearcats ran off nine straight points. Six straight points by Jefferson followed to close the margin to three before SBU ballooned its lead back to nine.

Five straight points from Henry and a Suggs basket pulled Mary within 69-67 with just under two minutes remaining but soon the Marauders were forced to foul. The Bearcats took the challenge of winning the game at the line and made 7-of-8 free throws to ensure a win for the home team.

Mary (0-2 overall) held a 23-12 edge in points off turnovers but SBU (1-1) held a 39-29 edge in rebounds. The Bearcats went 22-of-28 at the free throw line to the 11-of-20 effort for the Marauders.

Lindquist and Pat Thomas both added nine points for the Marauders. Thomas also had three assists and five rebounds.

Kai Woodfall posted 14 points for SBU. Cartier Dean had 12 off the bench and Logan Harvey added 11. Louis Baltazar added ten rebounds and eight points.

The Marauders next visit NCAA Division I and Big 10 member University of Nebraska on Tuesday, Nov. 15. Game time against the Cornhuskers in Lincoln, NE, is 7 pm at the Pinnacle Center.
