BILLINGS, Mont. - Making a trip to the Montana State University Billings campus, the University of Mary Men's Soccer team started off the first day of the Rimrock classic with a match against former Great Northwest opponent South Dakota School of Mines.
Â
The Marauders (0-2-1) sturck first and continually outshot the Hardrockers (0-2-1) over the course of the match, but couldn't find the winning combination as the teams ended on a 1-1 draw in double overtime.
Â
U-Mary wasted little time getting the offense in gear as they fired off three shots in the first 11 minutes of the match, with
Christoffer Nogueira finally breaking down the Hardrocker defense with a loose ball scramble in the box followed by a quick poke past the keeper to put the Marauders up 1-0 in the 11th minute.
Â
The offense wouldn't slow down from there as the Marauders had three more shots by the 20th minute before the Hardrockers offense finally came to life. South Dakota Mines had their first shot on goal in the 25th minute, which was saved by
Mitch Taveira who got the start in goal for U-Mary, but the Hardrockers had the equalizer come in the 33rd minute to put the Marauders on their heels. Matt Kinney had a breakaway down the right side of the pitch and sent a cross into the box that found the back of the net and tied the match up at 1-1.
Â
U-Mary was able to keep the action on South Dakota Mines' side of the field with three more shots, two on goal, followed by two corner kicks, but couldn't regain the advantage as both teams went into half tied at 1-1.
Â
The match was still about the Marauders in the second half as they had four shots and four corner kicks before the Hardrockers recorded their first, but keeper Jack Seifert ensured the match would remain tied. Tensions were running high as the referee gave a caution to either team in the 63rd minute, but U-Mary was unable to leverage their aggression into another goal as five more shots failed to find the net through the end of the half. Both teams went into overtime tied at 1-1.
Â
The Marauders outshot the Hardrockers in the first overtime period with two corner kicks and one shot on goal, but Seifert once again proved the difference, as U-Mary could not find purchase. The Hardrockers had an opportunity of their own in the first overtime period with a shot coming in the 95th minute, but Taveira kept the match going with a save of his own.
Â
U-Mary's first shot of the final frame came from
James Liddiard close to the box on the left wing but the shot sailed high and the second came in the form of a header from
Alex Boyes but sailed wide of the goal. South Dakota Mines had a shot of their own in the 106th minute but Taveira once again put a stop to that with his sixth save of the match and both teams played to the 1-1 draw.
Â
Nogueira had six shots in the match, two on goal, to go with his unassisted goal.
Â
Liddiard, André Almqvist, and
Aaron Brennan had multiple shots to supplement the Marauder attack but of the combined 10 shots only three were on goal.
Â
Taveira spent all 110 minutes in the keeper's box and he responded with six saves to go with one goal allowed.
Â
As a team, the Marauders outshot the Hardrockers 21-10, but only six shots were on goal for U-Mary, compared to seven on goal for South Dakota Mines. U-Mary also held the corner advantage with 10 corner kicks to South Dakota Mines' 2.
Â
The Marauders will take on Carroll College on Sunday, September 13, for the final day of the Rimrock Challenge.
