Marauders Swept by Bulldogs on Senior Day

BISMARCK, N.D. – It was a day of celebration off the field for the University of Mary. For the University of Minnesota Duluth the celebration came on the field. The Bulldogs slugged four home runs on the day and swept the Marauders 5-1 and 11-1 on Senior & Parents Day for Mary.

The Marauders honored two seniors, left-handed pitchers Michael Vollrath and Travis Famias, between games. Both seniors served as the Mary starting pitchers on the day.

Leadoff hitter John Meyer, the offensive star in the opening game for the visiting Bulldogs, drilled an 0-2 pitch to the left center fence for a triple. He scored the opening run when the next hitter, Josh Denisen, hit a sacrifice fly to center field.

The UMD lead doubled in the third when Alex Wojciechowski doubled home Meyer. A sacrifice fly added a run for the Bulldogs in the fifth before Spencer Diedrich hit a solo home run in the sixth. Wojciechowski hit a sacrifice fly in the seventh for a 5-0 lead.

Mason Schiff accounted for the lone Marauders run in the seventh when he blasted a solo home run to left in the home half of the seventh.

Vollrath, who became the Marauders career leader in starts and innings pitched in a 4-3 win over Minot State on Wednesday, threw a complete game for Mary. In seven innings he allowed six hits and five walks while striking out five.

Drew Feuerbach posted two of the Marauders five hits.

Meyer finished the opener 2-for-3 with three runs scored. Wojciechowski was 2-for-2 with two RBI.

Kevin Stocke kept the Marauders offense in check, giving up five hits and no walks with four strikeouts in seven innings.

Famias, the game two starter, was given the starting assignment for just the second time in his career and the first time since his freshman season. It was his school-record 70th pitching appearance.

Meyer rudely greeted Famias by driving a full count pitch over the left field fence for a leadoff home run. The Bulldogs tacked on a second run in the first inning and led the Marauders 2-0.

The Bulldogs tacked on two runs in the fourth before salting the game away in the fifth on back-to-back solo home runs by Wojciechowski and Kyle Comer, increasing the UMD lead to 6-0.

Trailing 11-0 in the eighth, a single by Schiff and a UMD error resulted in the Marauders lone run of the game.

Schiff finished 2-of-4 to lead a Mary offense that recorded just four hits.

Meyer was 2-for-4 with two runs scored and an RBI. Comer was 3-for-5 with two runs scored and two runs batted in. Jimmy Heck finished 3-for-5 with two RBIs. Wojciechowski scored three times, drove in one and collected two hits.

Alex Ferguson earned the win, allowing no runs, one walk and three hits while striking out five in five innings. At one point he retired seven straight hitters, including four straight strikeouts while the game was still in doubt.

The Marauders are 8-36 overall and 6-24 in the Northern Sun. The Bulldogs are 28-12 and 22-8.

The Marauders close out an eight game home stand when Northern State visits on April 29 at 1:30 p.m.
