SAN ANTONIO – Defensive miscues cost the University of Mary an opportunity for a win in the opener and St. Mary's University's offense dominated the final game of the series to give the Rattlers 9-3 and 13-0 wins to sweep the visiting Marauders for a second straight day.
 
GAME 1: St. Mary's 9 U-Mary 3
A Marauders three-run outburst in the fifth knotted the day's opener but multiple miscues led to the Rattlers scoring five unearned runs in their final two at bats for a 9-3 St. Mary's win over U-Mary.
 
Down three, the Marauders used two hits and two Rattlers errors to pull even in a game for the lone time on the weekend.
 
Seth Meide started the Marauders comeback with a one out bunt single. The redshirt freshman crossed the plate on a Rattlers throwing error. U-Mary proceeded to load the bases with two outs when Tom Imholte and Andrew Beyer both were hit by pitches and Trenten Hove reached on an error. Sean Hennen followed with a two-run single, scoring Imholte and Beyer.
 
The Rattlers retaliated immediately in the bottom of the fifth. Jake Marler hit a one-out double and scored on a single by Mario Maldonado, who was thrown out on the bases for the second out. After two U-Mary errors led two a second run, Jan Paul Reguero doubled in another unearned run for a STMU 6-3 lead.
 
St. Mary's sealed the game in the sixth, scoring another three runs, all unearned, as the Marauders allowed three hits while committing two errors.
 
Jake Johnson was solid on the mound for the Marauders in his collegiate debut. The freshman allowed three earned and three unearned runs in five innings. He gave up eight hits and two walks while striking out two.
For the third straight game the Marauders were limited to four hits. Cody Butler pitched the seven inning complete game, allowing three unearned runs and two walks.
 
Marler recorded two of the Rattlers 11 hits, scoring twice and driving in a run.
 
GAME 2: St. Mary's 13 U-Mary 0
The Rattlers scored seven runs in the second and four in the third to swamp the Marauders in the final game of the four game series. Just as in the first game of the day, defensive miscues again were costly for U-Mary as just two of the seven second-inning runs were earned.
 
St. Mary's pounded out 15 hits, including a 3-for-5 effort by Brooks Orton. He scored twice and drove in two runs. Al Gonzalez finished 3-for-3 with two runs scored and an RBI.
 
The Marauders had two hits, a single apiece for Ethan Meade and Mason Schiff.
 
Garrett McKenzie earned the win for STMU. He allowed two hits in five shutout innings with two walks and six strikeouts.
 
U-Mary is 0-4 on the season. St. Mary's, which is ranked in its region, improves to 8-4.
 
The Marauders next play 10 games over spring break in Tucson, Ariz., beginning Feb. 28.
