BROOKINGS, S.D. - Playing in the second of their tune-up games, the University of Mary Women's Basketball team paid a visit south to take on Division-I foe South Dakota State University.
Â
The Marauders had a good showing out of the gate but couldn't match the pace of the Jackrabbits as U-Mary fell in the exhibition matchup 85-40.
Â
South Dakota State opened up the contest with a 12-2 run, but the Marauders fought right back as they narrowed the gap off a handful of shots from
Hannah Larson,
Brittney Dietz, and
Dani Williams, coupled with some long-range shooting from Dietz and
Haley Hibbs that cut the lead down to 21-14 at the end of the first quarter. U-Mary was unable to keep the momentum going, though, as the Jackrabbits opened up the second quarter with a 7-2 run and held the Marauders to eight points in the frame as U-Mary entered the break down 36-22.
Â
Unfortunately the scoring wouldn't slow for the home team as South Dakota State piled on the points through the second half, starting with a 27-7 difference in the third quarter to go with a 22-11 mark in the fourth as the Marauders left the arena with an 85-40 decision to complete the preseason portion of the schedule.
Â
Dietz led the scoring for U-Mary as she totaled 16 points on 6-of-16 shooting to go with eight rebounds and one assist.
Â
Larson continues to solidify her all-around status as she scored seven points on 3-of-7 shooting, to go with five rebounds, four assists, and two blocks on the night.
Â
Hibbs sunk both of her perimeter shots for six points and also added three rebounds of her own; while
Dani Williams registered nine points off the bench along with three rebounds, one assist, one block and one steal.
Â
With the regular season on the front door, the Marauders will host Washburn University next Friday, November 13, at 7:00 PM, before taking on Pittsburg State University on Saturday, November 14, at 5:30 PM; both games will be played at the McDowell Activity Center.
