Second Half Woes Plague U-Mary in 3-0 Loss to Simon Fraser

BURNABY, B.C. - Making their annual trip north of the border, the University of Mary Men's Soccer team paid a visit to Simon Fraser University this evening to conclude the longest road trip of the season.

The Marauder (3-11-1, 2-9-0 GNAC) pulled off the upset victory at home earlier in the season against the Clan (7-3-4, 6-2-3 GNAC) but could not capture the magic on the road as the home team prove victorious in both contests with Simon Fraser defeating U-Mary 3-0 on the nightcap.

The Clan controlled the pace of the match early on as they took six shots in the first 25 minutes of the match while holding the Marauders to one, but U-Mary's defense held fast as Mitch Taveira made four saves while the back line blocked one to keep Simon Fraser out of the goal through the initial portion of the first half.

The Marauders did manage four shots with two on goal, yet the Clan's defense proved resilient as Brandon Watson made two saves while the defenders blocked another. So the first half ended up relatively quiet, per the norm for U-Mary, as both offenses have plenty of opportunities to notch the first goal but both defense employed the bend-but-don't-break look without surrendering a goal.

Yet what has also been the norm as of late for the Marauders is the second half slump as U-Mary has been outscored 23-4 after the break so far this season.

That trend would continue as Simon Fraser broke through in the 51st minute with a goal from Brendan Shaw after a cross came in from Shane Satar that found Adam Jones, and Jones sent a pass into the middle for Shaw to poke past the keeper to give the Clan a 1-0 lead.

Aaron Brennan had a chance to tie the match up in the 65th minute, but Watson ensured that would not be the case as he saved the shot on goal attempt to keep the Marauders without a goal. After a handful of U-Mary shots that failed to crack the Clan's defense, Simon Fraser tacked another goal onto their lead in the 80th minute after Calvin Opperman sent a cross into the middle of the field that was taken by Anthony Van DeVendel and the eventual shot sailed past the keeper to make the score 2-0.

U-Mary ended up taking four more shots before the end of the match but failed to find the back of the net, and the Clan added one final goal in the 88th minute off a pass from Jones to Opperman, with Opperman recording the final goal off a shot about 15 yards out from the net to hand the Marauders a 3-0 loss on the evening.

The Marauders offense did manage five shots on goal with two each coming from James Liddiard and Aaron Brennan, while the Clan ended up with 13 shots on goal with Mitch Taveira putting a stop to 10 of them.

Even though Simon Fraser outshot U-Mary 27-11 on the match, the corner kicks were relatively even with the Clan taking seven total while the Marauders finished with five.

U-Mary will make their final trip to the Pacific Northwest next week, starting with a rematch against Seattle Pacific University on Thursday, October 29, followed by the second contest against Saint Martin's University on Saturday, October 31.
