BISMARCK, N.D. - Facing a tough test at home against a nationally ranked opponent, the University of Mary Men's Soccer team took on #18 Seattle Pacific University for the second of four home matches.
Â
The Marauders (3-7-1, 2-5-0 GNAC) featured a stingy defense in the first half but the Falcons' (8-1-2, 4-1-2 GNAC) offense came to life in the second half as U-Mary fell to the onslaught at 4-0.
Â
Seattle Pacific wasted little time in the match as they fired off five shots in the first 16 minutes before U-Mary could manage one; thankfully
Ludvig Rhodin was there to put a stop to any efforts as he made three saves while the other two sailed high to keep the match scoreless early on.
Â
The Marauders managed a shot from
Christoffer Nogueira in the 17th minute but his attempt sailed wide left of the goal, and the Falcons went right back to work as they took five more shots by the 39th minute with two being blocked by the Marauders' defense, another hitting the crossbar and the others traveling high.
Â
Nogueira took another shot before the end of half but couldn't get it on target as both teams went into halftime with a scoreless tie.
Â
After a goalkeeper change for Seattle Pacific, the teams went right back to work in the second half yet the difference came in the first six minutes with Bryson Pavel taking a cross from Ian Adams in the 51st minute and headed the shot past Rhodin to give the Falcons a 1-0 lead.
Â
It didn't take long for the wave of goals to start rolling in as the Falcons added a second goal in the 58th minute off beautiful ball movement that bewildered U-Mary's defense and the end result was a through pass from Mori Tsuchiya to Danny Olivas who beat the keeper from about 10 yards out from the goal to increase Seattle Pacific's lead to 2-0.
Â
Frustration started to mount for the Marauders as the game grew noticeably physical after that point, but the Falcons would not be dismayed as they added the third goal in the 64th minute off a touch pass from Gabe Kellum to Tsuchiya who sent the shot past the keeper once again from about 10 yards out to put the Marauders in an even bigger 3-0 hole midway through the half.
Â
Unfortunately the goals wouldn't stop as Seattle Pacific shuffled their on-field lineup and registered the fourth goal on a rebound attempt from Peyton Harris as the Marauder defense did a great job stopping another shot but couldn't keep the loose ball out of the Falcon's possession.
Â
The match finally came to an end but not before the tempers continued to flare through the end of the match as U-Mary dropped the match 4-0 to the Falcons.
Â
The Marauders managed six shots in the match but the only attempt that came on goal was from André Almqvist in the second half but couldn't sneak it past Seattle Pacific's keeper.
Â
U-Mary did a fantastic job on the defensive end in the first half as they faced 10 shots and nine corner kick attempts from Seattle Pacific but managed to keep the score nil with three saves and many more defensive blocks.
Â
The Marauders will host Concordia University (Ore.) next Thursday, October 15, at the MDU Resources Community Bowl at 4 PM.
