Marauders Volleyball Stumbles Against Minnesota State

BISMARCK, N.D. – The Marauders Volleyball team took to the court tonight hoping to end a five game conference skid against the Minnesota State Mavericks. Unfortunately, U-Mary could not contain the Maverick offense and the Marauders fell in straight sets.

U-Mary fought hard in the first set, keeping the score within one through the midway point at 14-13 thanks to a stingy defense and a diverse attack. The Mavericks would slowly pull away, however, as they extended the lead 16-13, then 21-14, before putting U-Mary away 25-17.

After switching sides the Marauders tried to keep some momentum going in the second set but the Mavericks seemingly found their groove as they jumped out to an early 7-1. Minnesota State extended the lead from there after rallying off a 14-3 run to put the score at 21-4. U-Mary had no response for Chandra Honebrink who fired off three aces in a row for the Mavericks. Minnesota State would eventually close out the set 25-8 after exhibiting the same offense that defeated defending national champion Concordia-St. Paul.

The third set started out eerily similar to the second after the Mavericks jumped out to an early 9-1 lead. Yet the story with the Marauders fought back to narrow the deficit 12-9. It wouldn't be enough, however, as Minnesota State kept the pressure up en route to a 25-13 victory.

Paige Smith led the Marauders with seven kills on 17 attempts and also added a dig and a block assist. Lauren Randall continued her steady production with five kills on 18 attempts while adding two aces, one dig and one block assist to her total.

Janell Finkbeiner steered the offense today as she finished with 12 assists, four digs and one kill.

The Marauders showcased a team effort on the defense as four players finished with at least four digs.  Alex Brown led the way with six digs.

The Marauders (3-12, 0-6 NSIC) head back out on the road when they take on University of Sioux Falls on Friday, October 3. Then they'll head to Marshall, Minn., on Saturday, October 4, to compete against #7 Southwest Minnesota State.
