SIOUX FALLS, S.D. – While today's 52-0 setback for the University of Mary football team at Augustana wasn't part of the plan, the Marauders still earned a spilt in the opening four games of the season against Northern Sun South Division teams. The Marauders now begin preparing for their homecoming game against Bemidji State University and the next week's start the NSIC North schedule.
Augie proved unstoppable. After a missed field goal ended its first drive, the Vikings scored on their next seven possessions. Out of 11 possessions, Augie scored on eight, missed two field goals and punted just once.
After stopping a U-Mary fourth down attempt on the Marauders first possession of the game, Augie scored on the next play when Trey Heid hit Matt Gerry for a 61-yard touchdown pass for the only score of the first quarter.
Back to back drives of over 70 yards by the Vikings pushed their advantage to 17-0. Augie went into halftime up 24-0 after Heid found Matt Heller on a 34 yard scoring pass.
The Marauders, who had overcome double digit deficits in previous games this season, was unable to mount a second half rally as the Vikings scored three touchdowns in the third quarter before finishing the scoring with another touchdown in the fourth.
Grant Singer paced the Marauders statistically. The NSIC leading tackler made 14 stops, including five solo stops and a tackle for loss. The All-American linebacker has posted double digit stops in all four games this year.
Darien Saeman added eight stops and
Maceo Brown had seven.
Ben Jolliffe finished 12-of-23 passing for 129 yards and one interception. The redshirt freshman quarterback also ran for a team-high 49 yards.
Elby Pope caught three balls for 31 yards.
Heid completed 14-of19 passes for 201 yards and two scores for Augie. He also ran for 25 yards. Chase Marso came off the bench to complete all nine of his pass attempts for 98 yards and a score. The main recipient was Heller, who caught six passes for 79 yards and a score.
Dajon Newell paced all players with 100 yards rushing and a scored for the Vikings. CJ Ham scored twice and ran for 69 yards while Jackie Davis recorded 66 yards and a score.
Overall, Augie held a 31-13 edge in first downs and a 575 to 261 yardage advantage.
The Marauders next host Bemidji State on Saturday, Oct. 4. Kickoff is set for 2:30 p.m.
