Box Score ST. PAUL, Minn. – Looking for their first road win of the season, the University of Mary men's basketball team saw its offense short-circuit in the second half of a 66-60 loss at Concordia University – St. Paul. The Marauders scored just 25 points after intermission.
Leading 35-29 at intermission after making 52.2 per cent of their field goal attempts, the Marauders (5-16 overall / 3-13 Northern Sun) shot just 33.3 per cent (8-of-24) in the second half and missed all six three-point attempts. The Golden Bears (7-13 / 4-12) ratcheted up their offensive flow after intermission, making 43.5 per cent of their shots, including a 4-for-9 effort behind the arc.
The Marauders jumped out to an early 19-6 lead behind a 15-0 run fueled by consecutive three-pointers from
Mike Johnson. The Golden Bears closed the gap to one but two free throws and a three-pointer by Johnson pushed the Marauders lead to six points at the half.
With just under ten minutes remaining, the Golden Bears moved ahead 47-46 on a Chris Halverson layup. On a dunk by Musungayi, the Marauders retook the lead 48-47 for the last time. After falling behind again, Musungayi hit two free throws to knot the game at 54-54 at 4:26. The Golden Bears took the lead for good on a Mike Yahnke three-pointer with 4:02 left in the game.
U-Mary, down a point, rebounded a Concordia miss with 1:38 remaining before subsequently turning the ball over. After the Golden Bears grabbed an offensive rebound, Concordia pushed its lead to 63-60 on a Cordell Smith layup with 59 seconds showing. Failing to close the gap after a missed jumper from Musungayi, Smith cemented the win for the Golden Bears with 15 seconds remaining when he hit his fourth three-pointer of the night.
Musungayi led the Marauders with 17 points. Johnson, who was 3-for-3 on trey attempts, scored 11 points.
Germain Decoste added nine points and seven rebounds.
Travon Mitchell led all players with 19 points in a reserve roll for the Golden Bears. He hit three treys in five attempts. Behind four treys, Smith had 17 points and seven rebounds for Concordia. Tariz VanPelt added 12 and Mike Yahnke 11.
The Marauders return to Northern Sun North division play next weekend when U-Mary travels to the University of Minnesota Crookston and Bemidji State University.
