BISMARCK, N.D. -
Allison Adams was everywhere on the court tonight, but even in her last game as a Marauder she alone couldn't keep the Upper Iowa University Peacocks from winning in four sets over U-Mary.
Â
The Marauders showed flashes of their talent in the first set; the Peacock jumped out to an early 7-5 lead but the Marauders rallied off six straight points from three kills, one team block and two Upper Iowa errors to get back on top 11-6.
Â
After a quick timeout, the Peacocks climbed back into the set with two quick kills and an untimely U-Mary error to make things interesting at 11-10 in favor of the Marauders. After a tie at 13-13, the Marauder took the lead at 18-17 and jumped out to 21 -17, but five straight points from the Peacocks off two kills, an ace, and two Marauder errors saw the lead now favoring Upper Iowa at 22-21. U-Mary pulled of the reversal, however, and again jumped ahead at 24-22 off a team block and two Peacock errors. A brief hiccup gave a point back to Upper Iowa at 24-23, but
Lauren Boldt finally put the cherry on top with a set-ending kill, giving the Marauders a 25-23 first set victory.
Â
Set two was a tale of two runs; Upper Iowa owned an early 9-3 lead, but the Marauder put on a brilliant display and fired off a 16-4 run from an impressive 11 kils and using some smart play to force five Peacock errors to give U-Mary a 19-13 lead.
Â
Upper Iowa got a response in and closed the gap at 19-16, but U-Mary quickly responded with two more points of their own to extend their lead to 21-16.
Â
Now it was time for Upper Iowa's run as they scored six of the next seven points off three kills, an ace and two U-Mary errors to tie the game at 22-22. The Marauders were on the brink of a two set lead at 24-22, but the Peacocks closed the gap back at 24-24. U-Mary again almost closed out the set at 25-24, but three straight Upper Iowa points gave the Peacocks a 27-25 second set victory.
Â
The third set saw another close battle as both teams were tied at 5-5 early in the set. Upper Iowa fired off a 6-1 run thanks to five kills and another U-Mary error, to go ahead 11-6, and the Marauders were forced to play catch-up from there.
Â
U-Mary never got closer than two points and the Peacocks matched the Marauders point-for-point en route to a 25-20 third set win.
Â
The offense eventually ran out of gas in the fourth set, as U-Mary forced a 7-7 tie after going down 5-2 early in the set. Upper Iowa started to pull away at 10-7, but U-Mary demonstrated their trademark resilience and regained the advantage at 11-10 after two kills, a block and an Upper Iowa error. Yet the Peacocks wouldn't let the Marauders gain any momentum and tallied six of the next seven points from two kills, two block and two U-Mary errors to take the lead back at 16-12.
Â
The Marauders were again forced to play catch-up but never saw another lead as Upper Iowa matched them point-for-point again en route to a 25-17 victory.
Â
Adams finished the last game of her career with 12 kills, 25 attacks, a .360 attack percentage, five block assists and one dig.
Kelsey Boyd, another senior, led the Marauders with 15 kills, 44 attacks, a .205 attack percentage, six digs, two block assists and one ace.
Â
Lauren Randall seemed to return to form as she finished the match with 12 kills, 38 attacks, two digs, and one block assist. Boldt also capped off her career with 11 kills, 30 attacks, two digs, and one block assist.
Â
Janell Finkbeiner had plenty of options to choose from tonight and finished the game with 34 assists, three digs, and one block assist. This marks the fifth time this season that Finkbeiner has registered at least 30 assists.
Â
Alex Brown continued to be a stalwart on the back line as she finished with 21 digs, four assists, one kill and one ace in the match.
Â
The Marauders close out a tough 2014 season with a 4-25 overall record and a 1-19 record in the Northern Sun. It was especially difficult for U-Mary, as eight teams in the Northern Sun had been ranked in the AVCA Division II top 25 rankings at some point in the season.
Â
Randall, a first year freshman for the Marauders, led all players with 233 kills, 721 attacks, and averaged 2.38 kills per set. She also finished second on the team in aces with 21, and third in digs with 176. Boldt is the other Marauder to earn at least 200 kills on the season and she finished with 207 kills, 650 attacks, and averaged 2.23 kills per set. Boldt was extremely active on the net as she is one of three Marauders with at least 40 block assists and finished with 47 on the year.
Â
Finkbeiner spent most of the year as the primary driver for the Marauder offense and she finished with 535 assists, most on the team. She also had a hand in the defense as she finished with 136 digs, fourth most on the team.
Â
Adams was the expert blocker for the Marauders and she finished her senior year with a team leading 20 solo blocks, 64 block assists, 144 kills, and 402 attacks. Adams also broke the U-Mary NCAA Division II solo block record and finished her career with 49 solo blocks.
Â
Despite being a sophomore, Brown proved herself capable of securing the back line as she led the team with 456 digs and averaged 4.61 digs per set, good for sixth best in the conference. She did have some help, however, as
Casey Reamann ended the year second on the team in digs with 186 and a team most 24 aces.
Â
The Marauders have youth on their side and will have a majority of their impact players returning for the 2015 season.
