Dietz's 35 Points Not Enough as Marauders Fall to Tritons in Overtime

SAN BERNARDINO, Calif. - Brittney Dietz scored a career high 35 points, Sloan Turner recorded her first double double of the season, but it was not enough as the University of Mary Marauders were felled by the University of California-San Diego Tritons 89-84 in a contested matchup that needed an overtime period to decide the victor.

Both teams fought back and forth through most of the first half; there were 10 lead changes and four ties en route to the Tritons holding the biggest lead of the game at 36-23 with 6:31 remaining in the first half.

The Marauders steeled themselves, however, and fought tooth-and-nail to crawl back into the match and regained the lead at 43-32 with 1:03 remaining in the first frame. A couple of baskets later from either team closed out the half and U-Mary remained on top 45-44 at the break.

The second half played a similar tune to the first as the teams struggled for position on either end of the court, with the Marauders holding their biggest lead at 64-60 with 7:21 remaining in the second after eight ties and five lead changes.

The teams continued their battle and the ball was in the Marauder's court at 75-75 with 21 second left in the half. Dietz got the call to put the game away but she missed the potential game-winning layup with two seconds left, and the Tritons corralled the rebound to send the game into overtime.

The Marauders grabbed an early advantage in the overtime period; a layup from Dietz combined with a layup and two free throws from Kaitlyn Haag gave U-Mary a 81-78 lead with 3:09 left in the game.

The lead would not last and a clutch three pointer from the Tritons tied the game with 2:37 remaining. The basket kicked off a 7-0 run from UC-San Diego as they retook the lead at 85-81 with only 1:57 left on the clock.

The Marauders had an opportunity to tie the game but two missed free throws only narrowed the score to 85-83 with 58 seconds left in the match.

The Tritons finally put the game away after a layup and two made free throws gave them an 89-83 lead.  The final score was 89-84.

Dietz set a career high in points with 35 that included 17-18 made free throws and 8-20 shooting from the floor. She added four assists, four steals, three rebounds and a block in 41 minutes of action.

Turner finished the night with 11 points and 12 rebounds for her first double double of the season. She also recorded two steals, one assist and a block in 33 minutes on the floor.

Hannah Larson proved to be active on all ends of the court again, she finished the game with 10 points, seven rebounds, four assists and two steals in 26 minutes.

Haley Hibbs was the fourth starters to record double-digit points as she finished with 11 points, five rebounds, three assists and one steal in 31 minutes.

Haag proved to be a spark off the bench as she scored 10 points, grabbed six rebounds and swatted away a shot in only 12 minutes on the floor.

The Marauders (0-2) will head back to North Dakota next week when they travel to Valley City to take on the Valley City State University Vikings on Wednesday, Nov. 19.
