Women's Basketball Opens Up Season with Trip to San Bernardino, Calif.

This Week: The University of Mary Women's Basketball team is eager to get started on the 2014-15 season after playing two exhibition games against Dickinson State University and Concordia College (Minn.). The Marauders kick off their season when they travel to San Bernardino, Calif., to compete in the Tip-Off Classic hosted by California State University, San Bernardino. U-Mary will face off against the Coyotes on Friday, Nov. 14, before taking on the University of California, San Diego Tritons on Saturday, Nov. 15.

The Records: This tournament will be the first games of the year for all the teams, last year the Coyotes finished 9-16 overall with an 8-14 record in the California Collegiate Athletic Association. The Tritons finished the 2013-14 season with a 16-11 overall record and a 13-9 record in the CCAA. This will be the first game that the Marauders will play against both teams while in NCAA Division II.

Last Year: The Marauders, under second-year head coach Rick Neumann, finished 17-10 overall with a 14-8 record in the NSIC. U-Mary made it to the NSIC Tournament and ultimately lost to the Minnesota State Mavericks, who were ranked 20th overall in the country at the time.

Opening Series: The Marauders have fared rather well under Coach Neumann in the opening games of the season before the start of conference play. In 2013-14, the Marauders went 2-1 in opening season games with wins against South Dakota School of Mines and Biola University (Calif.), and the loss coming against #1 Vanguard University. In 2012-13, U-Mary traveled to Pittsburg, Kan., to compete in a tournament hosted by #3 Pittsburg State University (Kan.). The Marauders defeated Missouri Southern State University in the first game of the season before falling to #3 Pittsburg State. Then the Marauders rallied off three straight wins against Sonoma State University, California Maritime Academy, and Valley City State University to open up the '12-13 season 4-1.

Next week: The Marauders, after returning from California, will pay another visit to Valley City State University on Wednesday, Nov. 19 to take on the Vikings. Later in the week, U-Mary will play host to a trio of game, starting on Friday, Nov. 21 when they host Canadian Mennonite University in the first of back-to-back games between the teams. Canadian Mennonite University will stay in town to play the second game on Saturday, Nov. 22. Then U-Mary will host University of Nebraska-Kearney in the closer on Sunday, Nov. 23.
