MARSHALL, MINN. – U-Mary fought hard today but #9 Southwest Minnesota State was too much for the Marauders as they fell in straight sets to the Mustangs.
The Mustangs opened up the floodgates early on the Marauders, jumping out to an early 6-1 before extending the gap to 10-2, then 14-4. Yet U-Mary has never been a team to back down as they fight tooth and nail to narrow the margin to 16-13 thanks to three kills, four team blocks, and some unforced errors on Southwest Minnesota. The Mustangs battened down the hatches and held onto the lead en route to a 25-16 victory in the first set.
The Marauders came out fighting in the second set, riding the wave of four kills, an ace from
Casey Reamann, and a couple of unforced errors from the Mustangs to take an early 7-6 lead. Southwest Minnesota opened up the offense and regained the advantage after a 5-0 run put them up 11-7. U-Mary tried to respond but would only narrow the deficit to 12-9. From there, the Mustangs methodically put the Marauders away after building up the lead to 15-9, and coasting to a 25-17 second set victory.
Southwest Minnesota kept a foot on the pedal in the third set, striking fast with an early 8-1 lead. U-Mary got close as they could at 10-5 but had no answer for the Mustang offense as they cruised to a 25-12 three set sweep.
Lauren Randall had another decent game despite the loss. She finished with eight kills, 24 attacks, one assist, four digs and three block assists.
Allison Adams kept her defensive production up with one solo block and three block assists. She also added four kills on 14 attacks for a .214 attack percentage.
Katelyn Olson was the primary driver for the offense tonight as she finished with eight assists, one kill, one dig and one block assist.
Alex Brown directed the defense with 13 digs and
Paige Smith was a force on the net with three block assists.
The Marauders (3-14, 0-8 NSIC) return home for their next match on Friday, October 11, to host #13 Wayne State College in the first of two Dig Pink Weekend games.
