BISMARCK, N.D. - The Marauders had their hands full today with Simon Fraser University, and the Clan demonstrated why they are one of the premier teams to beat in the GNAC as they defeated the Marauders 3-1.
Â
Simon Fraser controlled most of the first half, firing off 12 shots to the Marauders' lone attempt. The Clan recorded the first goal of the game in the 17th minute off a free kick from #24 Robert Hyams to #26 Mateo Espinosa. Espinosa chipped the ball in from about five yards out to give Simon Fraser a 1-0 lead.
Â
Not wasting any time, the Clan recorded their second goal of the game in the 27th minute. #10 Calvin Opperman took the ball on the near side and sent a cross over the middle. #9 Jovan Balgojevic headed in the cross from about five yards out for his conference leading 12th goal of the season. The Marauders went into halftime down 2-0.
Â
The second half started off eerily similar to the first as the Clan fired off three shots before U-Mary registered their second attempt of the game. Simon Fraser extended their lead in the 68th minute when #11 Niko Schroettle took a through pass from Hyams and chipped the ball over the keeper for a 3-0 advantage.
Â
U-Mary finally got on the board against the Clan in the 71st minute when
Jayden Mounsey took a corner kick and caused a scramble in front of the goal.
Ramsey Blahnik was there to corral the ball and send it into the back of the net to cut Simon Fraser's lead to 3-1. It wasn't enough, though, as the Clan cruised the rest of the way and gave the Marauders their sixth straight loss in conference.
Â
Blahnik's only goal was his first of the season and he only needed one shot to pull it off.
Aaron Brennan was the only other Marauder to challenge the Clan's goalkeeper with two shots and one shot on goal. Mounsey ended the game with one assist.
Â
U-Mary (2-6-1, 1-6-0 GNAC) continue their home stand on Thursday, Oct. 16, when they host #22 Northwest Nazarene.
