Volleyball Scorched by Dragons, Fall 3-1

Box Score Moorhead, MN—Looking for their first win of the conference season, the University of Mary volleyball (3-6, 0-2 NSIC) team fell to Minnesota State University Moorhead (8-2, 1-1). The Marauders dropped the first two sets before winning the third, but the Dragons held on to win the match three games to one.
 
After missing Thursday's game, Alexis Jacobs led U-Mary with seven kills and was second on the team with 10 digs.  Allison Opp and Paige Smith each had five.
 
Brianna Atkins and Kaitlin VanWinkle each had 11 kills to lead MSU Moorhead. Atkins lead all players with a .588 hitting percentage.
 
The offensive struggles for the Marauders were evident early as they had a negative team hitting percentage through two sets. The Dragons also started slow hitting just .080 in the first set, but came out strong in the second hitting .423 and committing just one attack error.
 
For the game MSUM outhit the Marauders .227 to .050.
 
Digging itself a hole, U-Mary came on strong in the third set as a 10-2 run early on gave them an 11-2 lead.  The Marauders took advantage of several Dragons' miscues leading to six of their 10 points on the run.  U-Mary extended their lead to ten on an Allison Adams kill to make the score 16-6. MSUM answered with a 4-0 run to close the gap to seven, but the Marauders held on and cruised to take the set 25-17.
 
The Dragons come out on fire in the fourth set taking a 15-5 lead. The deficit was too much to overcome as U-Mary dropped the final set 25-10.  
 
MSUM had five different players finish with double-digit digs as they held a 74 to 57 advantage in the category.  Alex Brown led UM with 23 digs.
 
U-Mary will be back in action on Tuesday as they head to Minot State to take on the Beavers at 7 PM.
