Box Score Bismarck, ND – Five University of Mary men's basketball players reached double figures in points but the team effort wasn't enough to offset strong play on both ends of the court by MSU Moorhead in an 83-73 Dragons victory.
Chris Mason led the Marauders with 17 points and eight rebounds. The junior forward knocked down 3-of-5 three-point attempts and was 8-for-9 at the line.
Damonta Henry added two treys in four attempts, made 6-of-8 free throw attempts and scored 16 points.
Jalen Jaspers regained his scoring touch and added 11 points and six rebounds. Fellow senior Marc Musingayi had 11 points and two blocks and
Devan Douglas chipped in 12 points off the bench.
Tyler Vaughn was unstoppable behind the arc for the Dragons, nailing 6-of-7 three-point attempts on his way to a game-high 21 points. Perfect in ten free throw attempts, Jordan Riewer added 19 points and Malik Wood scored 12.
Trailing by seven points early in the game, the Marauders used two treys from Henry and one from Mason during an 11-2 run to grab a 17-13 lead. The Dragons then turned the heat up on the Marauders defensively and attacked the basket to outscore U-Mary 28-6 and claim a 41-23 advantage with 5:34 left in the opening half. The Marauders eventually whittled the deficit to 10 points at intermission.
Two Mason treys early in the second half pulled U-Mary within three points at 49-46. After the Dragons pushed their lead back to nine, a 10-2 Marauders run capped by a
Germain Decoste layup brought U-Mary within 60-59.
The Dragons then went to the free throw line to rebuild their advantage, going 8-for-8 at the charity stripe during a 12-3 run to give MSUM a double digit lead with 4:22 remaining in the game.
The Marauders shot 47.1 per cent from the field to 44.7 per cent for the Dragons and had a 24-21 advantage in field goals. MSUM won the game at the line, knocking down 33-of-42 attempts. U-Mary was a solid 20-of-25 at the line.
Turnovers also changed the face of the game. MSUM lost the ball just 14 times to 20 for U-Mary and the Dragons held a large 24-16 edge in points off turnovers.
U-Mary concludes the weekend by hosting Northern State University at 6 PM on Saturday, Dec. 7.
