Unusual Goals Highlight Marauders Draw with Wolves in Season Final

Box Score Aberdeen, SD – Two unusual goals provided the only scoring in the University of Mary women's soccer team's final match of the year as the Marauders closed out 2013 with a 1-1 draw on the road against Northern State University.

Despite dominating the opening half, U-Mary found the net just once on an own goal by a Northern State defender. Pressing hard down the left flank, Marauders forward Mykala Benjamin, who scored the golden goal in U-Mary's win on Friday, blasted the ball towards the Wolves net from the top corner of the penalty box. Attempting to clear the ball away from the net, Hilary Peterson instead headed the ball past her own goaltender at 21:42 to give the Marauders a 1-0 lead.

The Marauders had a 14-3 advantage in shots on frame in the first half, including a 5-0 edge in shots on goal.

With the Marauders defense continuing to smother the Wolves offense, Northern State used one big bounce to pull even. After entering the game a short time earlier, Amelia Taylor sent a long, high ball towards the Marauders net. As Marauders keeper Shelby Buttron came out to play the ball on the bounce, the ball hopped high over her head and into the net in the 71st minute to draw the Wolves even. It was the only shot on frame Northern State had during regulation.

U-Mary pressed hard in the first extra session, taking six shots to one for NSU. Wolves keeper Brittany Tietz was up for the challenge, saving all four Marauders shots on frame.

The second overtime belonged to the Wolves, who launched five shots. Buttron, who made her first save in the first overtime, stopped three shots to keep the game even.

Buttron was credited with four saves for the game to 11 for Tietz.

U-Mary finished with a 28-15 edge in shots and a 12-5 edge in shots on frame.

Failing to make the Northern Sun tournament for the first time since joining the conference in 2006, U-Mary finished the season 4-10-4 overall and 4-7-4 in the NSIC to place 11th. Northern State ends 2013 at 8-8-2 and 5-8-2.
