Box Score Crookston, MN—Coming off of their first conference win of the season, the University of Mary (4-14, 1-10) volleyball team fell to the University of Minnesota Crookston (10-9, 5-6) in Northern Sun action on Saturday night. U-Mary fell to Minnesota Crookston in four sets (15-25, 25-21, 22-25, 14-25).
The Marauders were led by
Paige Smith, who finished with eight kills and two blocks.
The Golden Eagles Brittany Looker finished with a game-high 20 kills to go with 11 digs.
U-Mary's offensive struggles were evident from the start. Despite scoring the first two points in the first set, the Marauders fell 25-15 and had just six kills. U-Mary's put forth a strong defensive performance in the second set holding Minnesota Crookston to a -.048 hitting percentage. The Marauders took advantage leading almost the entire set en route to a 25-21 win.
Heading into intermission tied 1-1, U-Mary put together another strong effort in the third set, but came up just short falling 25-22. Trailing 2-1, the Marauders came out flat in the final set being outhit .375 to .075 and losing 25-14.
UMC outhit U-Mary .185 to .059 and had a 54 to 35 advantage in kills. One of the worst blocking teams in the conference statistically, Minnesota Crookston actually held a 7-6 advantage in total blocks.
Defensively
Alexis Jacobs and
Alex Brown each had 15 digs for U-Mary.
U-Mary will be at home on Tuesday Oct. 22 as they host Minot State University for Cancer Awareness Night.
