Bismarck, ND – A major decision victory by All-American Trevor Johnson headlined the University of Mary wrestling efforts but an early deficit proved too difficult to overcome in a 27-16 loss to #13 Augustana.
 
Trailing 12-0 after losing the first two matches by pinfall, Johnson picked up the Marauders win of the day at 141. Leading 2-1 after a quiet opening period, the nation's third-ranked grappler at 141 started to work over Zach Friederich in the second, building a 7-2 lead on a near fall and a takedown. The Bismarck, ND, native added two more takedowns in the third on his way to a 13-3 major decision.
 
Landon Della Silva fell just short of pulling the upset at 149, dropping a 13-10 decision to 5^th-ranked Nate Herda. Trailing 8-3 in the second, the U-Mary senior closed the second with an escape and a takedown to pull within two points. He would even the match at 10-10 before Herda snapped the tie with an escape. The Augie senior would catch Della Silva with a takedown late to push the Augie advantage to 15-4.
 
 
Brock Krumm followed for the Marauders quickest win of the day. The sophomore from Bismarck, ND, swept the leg out from under Parker Swanson just 30 seconds into the 165 pound match, causing both grapplers to fall to the mat. Swanson landed hard on his head and neck and appeared to be briefly knocked out. Swanson was unable to continue and the Marauders picked up six points on the medical default to climb within 15-13.
 
Hoping to take their first lead of the day, the Marauders John Devito fell just short at 174, suffering a 5-3 loss in overtime to Tim Weber. Trailing 3-0 partway through the second period, Devito forced overtime with a takedown in the second and an escape in the third. The U-Mary sophomore was unable to find any additional points and Weber won on a takedown in the first overtime session.
 
In another tight defensive battle, Brady Anderson earned the Marauders last win of the day at 184. The senior parlayed an escape and riding time for a 2-1 win over Jeff Nielsen. Anderson had an escape in the second before allowing Nielsen to even the match on an escape in the third. Before Nielsen managed to escape, though, Anderson had built enough riding time to claim the match and pull the Marauders within 18-16.
 
The Marauders could get no closer as they left 197 open and Augie's Brian Schultz ended the day with a 10-3 win over U-Mary freshman Levi Roemmich at 285.
 
The Marauders return to competition with a non-conference dual at Concordia College in Moorhead, MN, on January 8.
