Turner Explodes for 28 but Bulldogs Rally Past Marauders for Win

Box Score Duluth, MN – Josh Turner exploded for a career-high 28 points but the University of Mary was unable to fend off a late University of Minnesota Duluth rally. Trailing by double digits in the second half, the Bulldogs scored the winning basket with 16 seconds left in a 71-69 win over the Marauders.

A layup by Marc Musungayi gave the Marauders (3-8 overall, 2-5 Northern Sun) a 69-64 lead with 2:52 remaining in the game, but would prove to be the last points scored by U-Mary. Brett Ervin hit a jumper to pull UMD (4-7, 2-5) within three points at the 1:45 mark. After a Marauders miss, Calahan Skogman hit a three-pointer to pull the Bulldogs even with 1:14 remaining.

Following a timeout, the Marauders turned the ball over with 51 seconds on the clock. The Bulldogs took full advantage. Reece Zoelle had an open look from behind the arc but missed the shot. Skogman pulled down the rebound and scored the winning points on a layup with 16 seconds left.

With time running out for the Marauders, Alex Dorr misfired on a three but the rebound went out of play off the Bulldogs. With one final chance, the Marauders saw their hopes extinguished when UMD picked off the inbound pass to seal the Bulldogs comeback win.

A close game throughout, the Marauders trailed by six early in the second half before exploding for a 24-4 run to take a 14 point lead. Dorr scored 10 points and Turner hit three straight treys to key the U-Mary surge. UMD would answer with a 13-0 run the started with two treys by Skogman.

After failing to reach double digits in his last four games, Turner produced the highest point total of the season for U-Mary. The senior guard knocked down six treys in 12 attempts and finished 8-of-14 from the floor. He also hit all six free throw attempts and added three rebounds.

Dorr added 18 points. He hit four treys and grabbed seven rebounds. Musungayi had 13 points. Jalen Jaspers led the squad with nine rebounds and eight assists – both career highs – and scored eight points.

Zoelle led UMD with 21 points and Skogman had 17. Ervin added 15 and snared 13 rebounds.

After four straight games on the road, the Marauders return home to host Winona State University on January 11, 2013.
