Early Goals by Jones Boosts Marauders Past Mustangs

Box Score Bismarck, ND – Michelle Jones showed why the senior forward is an all-region performer, twice scoring in the first six minutes of the game for the University of Mary in a 3-2 home win over Southwest Minnesota State University.

Jones struck first just 3:07 into the game. Following an infraction on the Mustangs, Jones struck a free kick into the upper reaches of the net from 30 yards out for her first goal of the season.

Just 2:31 later the All-Northern Sun first team midfielder tallied again. Following a scramble off a Marauders corner kick, Jones found herself alone with the ball on the left side of the net and knocked it home from 15 yards.

Undefeated through their first three games, the Mustangs committed another mistake in the 28th minute and the Marauders took advantage. SMSU was called for a hand ball inside the penalty box, earning U-Mary a penalty kick. Junior midfielder and all-region player Alex Bachman-Williams struck the ball low into the right corner of the net for a 3-0 Marauders lead. It was the first goal of the year for the Marauders leading returning scorer.

U-Mary had to withstand an SMSU rally in the second half. Kendahl Fisher scored twice for the Mustangs to cut the Marauders margin to one. The Mustangs had two opportunities to pull even in the last 15 minutes but couldn't convert. One SMSU shot attempt on the doorstep of U-Mary's goal went over the net. Another shot eluded Marauders goalkeeper Ashley Akers but Jones kicked the ball away before the ball crossed the goal line.

A rather even game statistically, both teams took nine shots in the game with U-Mary holding an 8-6 edge in shots on frame.

The Marauders improve to 2-2 overall and 2-0 in the NSIC. The Mustangs slip to 3-1 and 1-1.

U-Mary closes out its 5-game home stand to open the season when the Marauders host the University of Sioux Falls on Sunday, September 16. Game time is 1 PM at the Community Bowl.
