Strong Defensive Effort Not Enough in Marauders Loss to Golden Eagles

Box Score Bismarck, ND – Valerie Lesu led a strong defensive effort by the University of Mary but the Marauders were unable to keep pace offensively in a 3-0 (25-15, 25-23, 25-17) loss to the University of Minnesota Crookston. The game was U-Mary home and Northern Sun opener.
 
Lesu recorded a game-high 17 digs as the Marauders tallied 42 total. U-Mary also was strong at the net, making nine blocks to six for UMC. Freshman Paige Smith led the Marauders effort up front, posting one solo and three assisted blocks.
 
Those defensive efforts helped limit the Golden Eagles to a .147 attack percentage for the night.
 
U-Mary struggled on the offensive side, hitting just .022 while logging 23 kills to 39 for UMC.
 
After a slow start in the first set, the Marauders would rebound to open a six point lead in the second. The Golden Eagles would get back into the game on a 10-3 run and eventually scored the final three points, the last two on kills by Brittany Looker.
 
Morgan Dake led the Marauders with six kills. Four teammates added four kills each. Looker led UMC with 11 kills and 11 digs.
 
The Marauders conclude their opening home weekend with a Parent's Day game against Bemidji State University on Saturday, September 17, at 4 PM.
