Allison Opp exploded for 18 kills and the University of Mary had two other players in double digits in a narrow five-set loss to South Dakota School of Mines and Technology to start day two at the Upper Iowa Volleyball Fall Invite. The host school then swept the Marauders in the opening weekend finale.
The matchup between former DAC-10 members featured three sets decided by three or fewer points. The Marauders (0-3) rallied to force a final set but the Hardrockers (1-3) held on for a 3-2 (20-25, 25-22, 28-26, 23-25, 15-9) win.
Opp tied her career-high in posting a game-high 18 kills against Mines. She also added four digs. Freshman
Alexis Jacobs posted her first collegiate double double with 16 kills and 23 digs.
A force in the middle,
Morgan Zabel posted a career-high 11 kills and also added two solo and three block assists to pace all players.
Valerie Lesu had 27 digs and two aces.
Emily Turkowski compiled 56 assists, two kills and eight digs.
Justine Blade had 16 kills for SDT.
The Marauders held a 65-52 advantage in kills but made 32 attack errors to just 18 for the Hardrockers.
Tournament host Upper Iowa (3-0) breezed past the Marauders 3-0 (25-14, 26-24, 25-15) in the team's last game of the Invite. U-Mary struggled offensively, hitting just .046 to .222 for UIU.
Opp again led the Marauders attack, posting eight kills.
Lauren Boldt and
Allison Adams both chipped in seven. Adams also had a solo and two assisted blocks. Lesu and
Alicia Ewen both had 10 digs.
Melanie Behnke had 13 kills for UIU.
The Marauders next compete in the Black Hills State Tournament on Sept. 7-8.
