Opening Set Heartbreak Leads to Marauders Demise

Box Score Fayette, IA – On the verge of claiming the opening set of the season, the University of Mary failed to hold off Lake Superior State, setting the stage for a 3-0 (27-25, 25-16, 25-20) Lakers sweep of the Marauders at the Upper Iowa Volleyball Fall Invite.

Overcoming a four point deficit, the Marauders (0-1 overall) rallied for a 24-23 lead on a kill by freshman Paige Smith. Serving for the set, U-Mary was unable to stop the attack by LSSU (1-0 overall). A kill by Lauren Boldt followed for a 25-24 Marauders advantage but once again U-Mary couldn't find the winning point. LSSU scored three straight points to capture the set behind two kills by Emily Snyder and a Marauders attack error.

Leading 18-15 in the second set, the Lakers scored six straight points – four off miscues by the Marauders – and sailed to the win. LSSU jumped out to a 17-9 lead in the final set and held off the Marauders rally.

Freshman OH Alexis Jacobs paced the Marauders attack with nine kills in her collegiate debut. The Bismarck, ND, native also had six digs, an ace and an assist. Boldt had six kills and two block assists and Allison Adams chipped in five kills.

Emily Turkowski distributed 25 assists. Alicia Ewen led all players with three assists. Smith had four block assists and Valerie Lesu made nine digs.

Snyder led all players with 12 kills and Gabrielle Olsen chipped in nine for the Lakers.
