25th Season of Marauders Football Kicks Off Saturday at Concordia-St. Paul

Game Time Set for 1 PM at Sea Foam Stadium

SATURDAY: The 2012 season is finally here as the University of Mary football team prepares to battle the Golden Bears of Concordia University - St. Paul. Not only the regular season opener but also the start of Northern Sun play, the Marauders visit Sea Foam Stadium on the campus of Concordia. Kickoff is set for 1 PM on Saturday, September 1.

THE RECORDS: This is the opening weekend for both U-Mary and Concordia.

LAST GAME: The Marauders suffered a heartbreaking 39-36 loss on a field goal at the final gun at Northern State to close out the 2011 season... The Golden Bears outlasted  Southwest Minnesota State University 60-53 at the Metrodome in the season finale.

LAST YEAR: U-Mary finished 5-6 overall, 4-6 in the Northern Sun and 3-3 in the NSIC North... Concordia University finished 2011 6-5 overall, 5-5 in the NSIC and 3-3 in the NSIC South.

MARAUDERS WEEKLY HIGHLIGHTS: Every Sunday, catch highlights of home and away games on Marauders Weekly. Originating from KFYR-TV in Bismarck, ND, the 30-minute Marauders Weekly will air Sunday nights at 10:35 PM following The Night Report across the NBC North Dakota Sports Network (KFYR-TV, KMOT-TV in Minot, KUMV-TV in Williston, and KQCD-TV in Dickinson). TICKETS: Game tickets for Marauders home games are available at the door. Adult tickets are $8 while seniors, college students and youth 18 years old and younger are $4. U-Mary students with their M-card and children 5 and under are free.

THE MARAUDERS-GOLDEN BEARS SERIES/LAST MEETING: The Marauders and Golden Bears have split the four meetings between the two teams with each team perfect on the other team's field. 2006: In the first meeting between the two schools, J. Robinson scored his second touchdown of the game with two minutes remaining to lead the Golden Bears over the Marauders 22-19 in Bismarck, ND. Trailing 15-3, Blair Sandy threw touchdown passes to Stacy Robinson and Matt Wall to lead a 17-0 run for U-Mary to take a lead. U-Mary held CU to 245 yards in the loss... 2007: Erik Kruse and Bayland Rippenkroeger both scored two touchdowns and Shawn Melland returned a fumble for a score and the Marauders rolled to a 37-20 road win over the Golden Bears. Kruse caught nine passes for 104 yards. Brandon Lewis had 2.5 sacks... 2008: Despite limiting the Golden Bears just 205 yards of offense, the Marauders suffered a 17-7 homecoming loss. CU sealed the win when D. Outlaw returned an interception 25 yards for a score in the third quarter. Pierre Atkinson and Melland both had 2.5 sacks for U-Mary.. 2009: In the last meeting between the two schools, Henry Lau threw for three touchdowns and Jamal Lomax ran for 127 yards in a U-Mary 27-7 road win. Lomax rushed for a score and caught a touchdown pass in the second quarter and the Marauders scored the final 27 points in the game.

QUICK LOOK AT CONCORDIA UNIVERSITY GOLDEN BEARS: Second year head coach Ryan Williams returns nine starters on defense but he needs to find seven new starters on the other side of the ball. TE Nate Thienes caught 38 passes for 387 yards and three scores. WR Tre Mason is a true deep threat, catching 29 passes for 647 yards. DE Zach Moore, who had 10 sacks in 2010 to earn all-region recognition, returns to the CU lineup after redshirting last season. Jordan Halvorson is the team's leading returning tackler after making a combined 73 stops. The Golden Bears averaged 27.8 points per game and allowed 34.7.

25: Marauders football opens its 25th season this weekend. The first varsity season for U-Mary was played in 1988 and the team went 2-7. In its first 24 seasons, the Marauders have a combined record of 161-89-1, posted 16 winning seasons, advanced to national playoffs 10 times and claimed six conference titles.
