Brady Anderson started a string of three straight wins to close out the night for the University of Mary but the Marauders fell too far behind early in a 21-9 loss to visiting Minnesota State University. The Mavericks won the first six matches of the night to ease to the Northern Sun win.
Anderson captured a 5-2 win over Brandon Pederson at 184 to snap six straight losses for U-Mary. Scoreless after the first period, Anderson led 3-0 after two. After a reversal by Pederson to open the third, Anderson regained his lead on an escape and riding time.
Despite moving up two weight classes, freshman
Tom Devito earned a 5-3 win at 197. Devito held a 4-2 lead after the first and went up 5-2 after two periods. The native of Peoria, AZ, gave up just one point in the final period to hold on to his second win of the week.
Martin Patron finished the night on a high note for the Marauders, defeating Nate Haynes 3-2 in a battle at 285. Patron jumped out to a 3-0 lead and held off Haynes the rest of the match.
Minnesota State jumped out to a 8-0 lead before both teams were open at 141 in a double forfeit.
Battling up one weight class,
Trevor Johnson suffered a tough 7-4 loss to Jesse Westphal at 149. Ranked second in the nation at 141, Johnson moved up as MSU had no opponent for him at 141. Down 6-2 after the first period, Johnson pulled within 6-4 and looked in position to get a pin but just couldn't fully turn Westphal.
The Marauders also lost a tough match at 157 where MSU's Tel Todd gained a 3-1 win in triple overtime over
Collin Engelhardt.
U-Mary next will host northern State on Thursday, February 16, to close out the 2012 regular season.
