Josh Turner and
Marc Musungayi both scored in double figures for the University of Mary but for the second straight season the Marauders men's basketball team opened the season with a loss against an NCAA Division I team from Wisconsin. The Marauders lost 76-46 at the University of Wisconsin – Milwaukee.
U-Mary opened last season against the University of Wisconsin-Green Bay.
Led by a hot start from
Alex Dorr, the Marauders jumped out to a 12-9 lead. The senior forward scored six of U-Mary's points during the opening run and Musungayi added four.
A program that won 20 games last season and returns three starters and eight letter winners, the Panthers slowly began to take control. Jumpstarted by an 8-0 run, Milwaukee finished the opening half outscoring U-Mary 25-9 to lead 34-19 at intermission.
The Panthers continued to pull away from the Marauders, eventually leading by as many as 31 points.
Musungayi scored 10 points for the Marauders and pulled down a game-high nine rebounds. He made all four of his free throw attempts.
Turner also scored 10 points for U-Mary. He also had two assists.
Dorr chipped in eight points and grabbed eight rebounds before fouling out late in the game.
Jalen Jaspers contributed seven points. Freshman
Brandon Tyler led the squad with three assists.
Kyle Kelm scored a game-high 15 points for the Panthers. Jordan Aaron added 12 points and seven assists and Thierno Niang had 11 points.
With the help of Musungayi and Dorr, the Marauders held a 24-16 scoring edge in the paint. The Panthers had a 17-6 advantage on points off turnovers and their bench out-produced U-Mary 38-11.
The Marauders open their home schedule when they host Mayville State University on Wednesday, November 14. Tip off is set for 7 PM at the McDowell Activity Center.
