Box Score Duluth, MN – The University of Mary was unable to find a solution for the balanced attack of 9
th-ranked University of Minnesota Duluth. The homestanding Bulldogs battered the Marauders 53-14 in Northern Sun football.
Able to produce similar numbers on the ground and through the air, the Bulldogs gained 270 yards rushing and passed for 294 to total 564 yards. The Marauders were limited to 251 yards, including 137 on the ground.
The Marauders slip to 4-6 overall and in the NSIC and 1-5 in the NSIC North. The Bulldogs are 9-1 and 5-1.
In the running for another NCAA playoff berth and an NSIC conference title, UMD scored the first 28 points of the game before U-Mary got on the board.
UMD drove the opening kickoff 75 yards in eight plays, initiating the scoring when Logan Lauters ran into the end zone from nine yards out for a 7-0 lead at 11:07 of the first quarter. The Bulldogs scored touchdowns on their next three possessions, covering 78, 63 and 76 yards on their subsequent drives.
The Marauders posted their first points after
Jake Nicholson forced a Bulldogs fumble that was recovered by
Preston Tescher at the UMD 23 yard line. Five plays later
Craig Bagnell scored from three yards out, pulling U-Mary within 28-7 with 1:00 left in the first half.
Not content to sit on its lead, the Bulldogs tacked on a 46 yard field goal by Andrew Brees as time expired to enter intermission leading 31-7.
UMD scored on its first three possessions in the second half, driving 71 and 84 yards in the third quarter and 72 yards in the fourth.
U-Mary then closed the game with an impressive possession, driving 77 yards on 13 plays.
Zach Roberson scored from one yard out with 13 seconds left in the game. The possession ate up 7:27 of the clock.
Evan Gross ran for 67 yards and
Dariouse Gravely picked up 57 to headline the Marauders attack.
Nick Jolliffe caught three passes for 39 yards to lead the aerial game.
Defensively
Grant Singer piled up a game-high 14 tackles. Nick Giannosa and
Troy Guptill both had tackles for loss.
Chase Vogler was the key figure in the Bulldogs attack. The senior went 19-of-24 for 260 yards and three touchdowns through the air and also ran for 45 yards. Zach Zweifel caught eight passes for 105 yards and a touchdown and Joe Reichert had six grabs for 86 yards and one score.
Aaron Sikorski ran for 82 yards to lead UMD run attack.
The Marauders close out the 2012 season against the University of Minnesota Crookston on November 10. The game will be played in Grand Forks, ND, at the Alerus Center.
