Box Score Bismarck, ND –
Alex Bachman-Williams took advantage of a defensive miscue by Northern State University to lead the University of Mary to a 3-2 overtime win over the Wolves. The Marauders fifth straight victory in what was their final home game of the season strengthens U-Mary's grasp on fifth place in the Northern Sun with one game remaining.
Bachman-Williams scored her fifth game-winning goal of the season in the 94
th minute after the Wolves defense misplayed the ball.
Emily Christensen played a long ball ball forward towards the Northern State goal. With Bachman-Williams and a Wolves defender in pursuit of the ball, Northern State goalkeeper Shaina Stein came out to make the save. Partially shielded by the defender and Bachman-Williams, Stein bobbled the ball and couldn't control it after making an initial save. The Marauders all-region performer then sidestepped Stein and a Northern State defender and easily tapped home the winning counter into a wide open net.
Northern State overcame a two-goal deficit. After halving the lead in the 73
rd minute on a goal by Laura Linscheid, the Wolves tied the game with just 20 seconds remaining in regulation. Hilary Peterson served the ball in front of the Marauders net and Miranda Brower was able to get her head on the ball and direct it into the net.
Despite dominating the first half, the Marauders managed just one goal prior to intermission. U-Mary scored on the team's fourth corner kick of the game.
Triggered by
Michelle Jones on the right side,
Blaire Brookshire received the ball in the air on the far side and passed it back to the right side of the goal box. All alone in front,
Andrea Muller gathered the ball and knocked it home for her sixth counter of the year for a 1-0 Marauders lead at 21:17.
In the opening half U-Mary held a 7-3 edge in shots on frame and built a 6-1 advantage in corner kicks. For the game the Marauders held a 21-6 edge in shots, a 10-5 advantage in shots on frame and generated 10 corner kicks to three for the Wolves.
The Marauders doubled their lead in the 73
rd minute, once again scoring off a corner kick. Jones corner kick was deflected out to Christensen and the freshman defender crushed a shot from 30 yards out for her first collegiate goal.
U-Mary improves to 9-7 overall and 9-5 in the Northern Sun. With 27 points the Marauders are currently fifth in the standings, two points ahead of Bemidji State. The Wolves fall to 3-11-3 and 2-9-3.
