Jones Tallies Twice as Marauders Breeze Past Wildcats

Box Score Wayne, NE – Michelle Jones tallied twice and the University of Mary exploded for a 4-1 win at Wayne State College. The four goals, all scored in the first half, is a season-high for the Marauders and propelled U-Mary to a sweep of its weekend road trip.

The victory pushes the Marauders into a tie for sixth place in the Northern Sun women's soccer standings with St. Cloud State. U-Mary has four games remaining in the regular season, including three at home. The Marauders improved to 6-7 overall and 6-5 in the NSIC. The Wildcats fall to 1-12-1 and 1-9-1.

With the wind to their back in the opening half, the Marauders struck quickly. Just 54 seconds into the match, Arika Westbee blasted a shot from 30 yards out that glanced off the bottom of the crossbar and into the net.

Alex Bachman-Williams doubled the Marauders lead in the eighth minute. Taking a feed from Kelsey Pacpaco, the junior All-NSIC player tallied from the top of the box for what proved to be the game-winning goal.

Jones then took over, scoring twice in a span of less than five minutes. The All-Northern Sun senior forward first beat the Wildcats goalkeeper off a corner kick, serving the ball directly into the net at 34:52. She followed with a goal from ten feet out at 39:12 with an assist to Dayna Domingo, boosting the U-Mary lead to 4-0. Jones is now tied with Andrea Muller for the team lead in goals with four.

The Wildcats weren't as successful using the wind in the second half, scoring just once when McKenna Adams connected for her sixth goal of the year.

Ashley Akers backstopped the Marauders defense with five saves. The senior goalkeeper made ten saves and allowed just one goal in the weekend sweep.

The Marauders held a 14-11 edge in shots and an 8-6 advantage in shots on frame. The Wildcats managed a 5-3 lead in corner kicks, including a 5-1 mark after intermission.

U-Mary returns home next weekend and will honor its three seniors – Michelle Jones, Ashley Akers and Ashley Tuschling.
