Sioux Falls, SD – It took until the last match of the night, but Martin Patron finally broke through for the University of Mary to give the Marauders their lone individual win of the night in a 31-3 loss to 5th ranked Augustana. U-Mary lost five matches that were decided by three or fewer points while facing a team ranked in the nation's top five for the third straight dual.
Patron rolled over Michael Roberts 5-0 at 285 and was in control the whole match. It was the third straight conference victory for the senior from Modesto, CA, who improved his record to 11-5 on the season.
A tough night for the Marauders started with a tight 3-2 loss by U-Mary's Hunter Menendez to Alex Burghardt at 125.
In the top matchup of the night featuring the region's top two grapplers at 141, Augie's Chism Fink pulled out a 3-1 upset of Trevor Johnson. U-Mary's sophomore is ranked first in the region and fourth in the nation.
At 157, Collin Engelhardt fell just short of upsetting Marcus Edgington, suffering a 3-2 loss to the third-ranked wrestler in the nation.
Brady Anderson dropped a tough 6-5 loss to Jayd Docken at 184 and Kriss McCleary lost a 6-3 decision to Sean Derry at 197.
After opening the Northern Sun dual season on Sunday with losses to top-ranked St. Cloud State and 3rd-ranked Upper Iowa, the Marauders slip to 0-3 overall and 0-3 in the NSIC. The #5 Vikings improve to 9-1 and 1-0.
U-Mary returns to the mat on January 22 at the University of Central Missouri Dual Jamboree in Warrensburg, MO. The Marauders will take on Ouachita Baptist, Truman State, Newman University and Central Missouri.
