Turner Trey Topples Eagles

Box Score Chadron, NE - Josh Turner drained a three-pointer with two seconds remaining on the clock and the University of Mary picked up its first win of the season, a 73-72 win at Chadron State. A hot-shooting Marauders squad was paced by a career-high 22 points from Damon Smith, who posted a double double.

The Marauders, who opened the season with a loss at NCAA Division I University of Wisconsin-Green Bay last Friday, evened their season record at 1-1. The Eagles slip to 0-2.

Tied at 69-69, Kevin McClelland hit a three for the Eagles with 73 seconds left in the game. Darius Robinson would hit one of two free throws with 50 seconds on the clock to get the Marauders within two.

After forcing a miss by Chadron State with the shot clock running out, Smith pull down a rebound with 14 seconds left to provide U-Mary the chance to regain the lead. Taking a feed from Robinson, Turner knocked down his second trey of the night with just two ticks remaining to win the game.

Leading much of the night, U-Mary built a double digit lead in the opening half. Chadron State eventually clawed its way back to take a 45-42 lead early in the second half. Threes from Robinson and Lamada Williams would propel the Marauders back in front and a Smith jumper gave the Marauders another double digit advantage at 63-53 with under ten minutes remaining.

Chadron State then proceeded to go on a 15-0 run to regain the lead. Robinson eventually evened the game once again when he knocked down a shot with 1:43 left, setting up the wild ending.

Smith posted his second career double double for U-Mary, pairing his career-high 22 points and 10 rebounds. He was 8-of-11 from the field, making both trey attempts and all four free throw. He also had three assists.

Robinson was 4-of-5 on three point attempts and scored 19 points. He also had six assists. Turner added 18 points, hitting 7-of-11 from the field.

McClelland led all players with 24 points. Chris Curtis added 16 for CSC.

The Marauders shot an impressive 61.4 per cent from the field, including a 10-of-17 mark behind the arc. U-Mary went 9-of-11 at the line. Chadron State shot 48.2 per cent overall.

U-Mary returns for its first home game of the season November 22 when the Marauders host Minot State University.
