Jevin Budde

A major cog in the resurgence of a nationally-ranked University of Mary men’s basketball program, Jevin Budde is now the driving force. In his fourth season at the helm, Budde was named the seventh Marauders head coach on May 16, 2011.

Two of Budde’s former Marauders are playing professionally overseas. His players have earned four Northern Sun all-academic citations, four NABC Honors Court mentions, an NSIC Player of the Week and an All-NSIC selection.

Taking over a team that lost four starters from the previous year, including three players who scored over 1,000 points in their careers, the Marauders were 8-18 In his first season as head coach of the Marauders during 2011-12.

The Marauders closed strong, winning their last two games and five of the final ten. Among the Marauders wins was a 21 point defeat over the 19th ranked team in the nation, a victory to knock one team out of first place in the conference standings and another which eliminated a team from post-season play. Budde also coached All-Northern Sun performer Damon Smith, who would sign a professional contract in Denmark and is beginning his second season playing professionally in Germany.

One of the nation’s top three-point shooting teams in the nation in 2012-13, the Marauders slipped to 4-23. Two players earned NSIC all-academic honors, including Alex Dorr. The Norwalk, IA, senior is now playing for the Derby Trailblazers in the English Basketball League while pursuing an advanced degree in international business at the University of Derby.

Featuring ten new players in 2013-14, the Marauders gelled late in the year and finished 5-7 down the stretch of the regular season, which included two overtime losses and a one-point setback. Marc Musungayi earned NSIC Player of the Week honors.

Budde joined the Marauders for the 2009-10 season as an assistant coach to Randall Herbst and the pair combined to revitalize a struggling program. After winning just seven games in 2008-09, U-Mary’s win total increased by eight and the team jumped eight slots in the Northern Sun standings in the duo’s first season coaching the squad. The Marauders finished 15-13 overall and placed fifth in the NSIC with a mark of 11-9, the team’s first winning marks since joining the NCAA. For the first time, U-Mary was listed in the NCAA region rankings, earning a spot in each regular season poll.

That initial success was just a precursor to a historical year the next season. The 18th-ranked Marauders finished 2010-11 with a record of 23-6 and their first-ever appearance in the NCAA tournament. U-Mary finished second in the Northern Sun with a record of 18-4, its best-ever finish in the NSIC. For the first time since joining the NCAA, the program received votes in the national poll, climbing as high as 14th. The Marauders also both hosted and won an NSIC tournament game for the first time. The 23 wins are the most for U-Mary since 1987. A 16-game winning streak was the longest since a school-record 19 in 1981-82. The Marauders led the nation for the second straight season in fewest turnovers.

Prior to joining the Marauders, Budde was a graduate assistant at the University of Nebraska-Omaha from 2006-08 where he met Herbst. In his second year, Budde helped coach UNO to a school-record in wins during a 25-7 season. The Mavericks advanced to the second round of the NCAA Division II national tournament after winning the final North Central Conference tournament. The squad led the nation in free throw shooting (79.7 per cent) and was tenth in scoring offense with 79.7 points per game.

Budde began his collegiate coaching at Bethany Lutheran College in Mankato, MN, where he worked as the head assistant men’s basketball coach from 2004-06. After a three-win season his first year, the squad improved to a record of 17-15 in his second season with a fifth-place finish at the 2006 NCCAA national tournament.

A native of Bettendorf, IA, Budde was a first team all-state high school player as a senior and a two-year captain of a team that went to state three times. After graduation, he attended NCAA Division I Creighton University. In two seasons with the Blue Jays, Budde twice was a member of an NCAA national tournament qualifying team (2000, 2001) that had a combined record of 47-18 in two years. He then transferred to Minnesota State University and led the Mavericks in assists both years (2001-02 and 2002-03). Budde also finished second in the NCC in assists and assist/turnover ratio.

Budde earned a master’s degree from the University of Nebraska-Omaha in Educational Administration and Supervision in 2008 and a Bachelor of Science degree from Minnesota State University in Elementary Education in 2004. He has taught in elementary schools in Minnesota and South Carolina.
