After throwing a combined no-hitter in his first appearance of the year, Jake Johnson might have been even more dominant his second time out. The University of Mary sophomore right hander was named the Northern Sun Pitcher of the Week after allowing just two hits and no earned runs in nine innings against West Virginia Wesleyan in his second start of the season.
Â
The first Marauders player to win a weekly honor in two years, Johnson held West Virginia Wesleyan to a pair of singles and an unearned run in a U-Mary's 2-1 loss to the Bobcats in a 12 inning affair. The Cambridge, Minn., native struck out four hitters and didn't allow a walk, though he did hit two batters in the game.
Â
In four different innings Johnson retired the WVW in order. Only twice did the Bobcats have two players reach in the same inning and both times it was the same formula; a U-Mary defensive error and a hit batter. Only four runners reached scoring position and just one made it past second base.
Â
The last U-Mary player to win a weekly award was outfielder Jason Shaul in April 2014. The last Marauders pitcher to claim NSIC weekly recognition was Shane Trattles in March 2013 after firing a no-hitter.
Â
In Johnson's first start of the season he threw six hitless innings against Point Park University, allowing one earned run on five walks while striking out five. Ryo Takanaka completed the no-hitter for U-Mary, tossing two hitless innings in a 3-2 Marauders win. Overall Johnson went 7.2 innings before allowing his first hit of the season. In 15 innings he has allowed two hits, given up one earned run, struck out nine hitters and walked five with a 0.60 earned run average.
