The University of Mary’s first NCAA individual champion, Melissa Agnew is the 2012-13 Marauders Female Athlete of the Year after posting an incredible year, winning three national championships and earning six All-American honors.
During the fall cross country season Agnew won the NSIC title and was named the Athlete of the Meet. She placed second at the NCAA regional before finishing seventh at the NCAA championships, earning All-American honors for the third straight year.
During the indoor season, Agnew set two more NSIC records and won conference track athlete of the year honors for the third straight championship season. She would also earn USTFCCCA Regional Indoor Track Athlete of the Year. Agnew would anchor the Marauders NCAA championship Distance Medley Relay team that posted the third best time in the history of Division II. The next day Agnew claimed the championship in the mile, earning her second All-American honor of the season.
Agnew capped her collegiate career by winning the 1,500 and the 800 meter runs at the NSIC championships, earning conference track athlete of the year honors. She then was named the USTFCCCA Central Region Track Athlete of the Year.
The senior closed out her career by winning the national title in the 1,500 meter run at the NCAA championships.
A 12-time All-American, Agnew also proved outstanding in the classroom, becoming the first U-Mary student-athlete to win an NCAA post-graduate scholarship. She also earned Northern Sun Myles Brand All-Academic recognition.
