Sarah McNulty, a highly decorated former University of Mary student-athlete with two state high school championships on her coaching resume, is the newest head coach of the Marauders women's soccer team. U-Mary athletic director
Roger Thomas today announced the elevation of the Marauders assistant coach to the top spot.
“Sarah has done a terrific job as an assistant coach for the University of Mary women's soccer program and she also has had great success at the high school level,” said Thomas. “She has great passion for Marauders soccer and we are excited that Sarah is coming on board.”
“As a former women's soccer player and an assistant coach at the University of Mary, I take a lot of pride in this program and am very excited to become the head coach,” said McNulty. “With the potential of our current team combined with our incoming recruits, we look to continue competing near the top of the Northern Sun.
“On the field our team will be disciplined, defensive-minded and organized, and will go after teams athletically. We will also continue our player's community awareness and involvement.”
McNulty becomes just the fifth women's soccer head coach at U-Mary since the program started in 1995. The Marauders have posted winning seasons 15 times in 17 years.
An assistant coach for the Marauders since 2009, McNulty helped the Marauders maintain their status as one of the top teams in the Northern Sun. U-Mary finished in the top five and posted a winning record and advanced to the NSIC tournament each year she has been on the bench as the team's top assistant.
In her first five years as head coach at Century High School in Bismarck, ND, McNulty directed the Patriots to state championships in 2007 and 2011. CHS also won four regional titles (2007-08, 2010-11). Entering her sixth season at Century High this spring, McNulty will continue to coach the Patriots through the remainder of this season.
The winner of several coaching honors, McNulty earned the US Youth Soccer Girls National Competitive Coach of the Year, Region II Girls Competitive Coach of the Year and the North Dakota Girls Competitive Coach of the Year honors in 2010.
A three-time All-American and three-time team captain at U-Mary, McNulty led the Marauders to NAIA national tournament appearances and Region III championships in 2002-04. A third-team All-American selection and the Region III Player of the Year in 2003, McNulty earned honorable mention All-American honors in 2002 and 2004. She was U-Mary's team captain and a first team All-Region selection in 2002-04. In her four seasons McNulty recorded 35 assists, second all-time at U-Mary. Including 11 goals, she registered 57 points, 11
th all-time for the Marauders.
McNulty is a 2005 graduate of U-Mary with a secondary education degree in biology. She earned her USSF “A” license in 2009.
McNulty replaces Levi Evans, who resigned to become the assistant coach at NCAA Division I University of Wyoming after eight seasons directing the Marauders. Evans coached McNulty at U-Mary in 2004 and the two reunited when McNulty joined his coaching staff in 2009.
