One of a small number of University of Mary student-athletes who have won a national championship, Shane Yates (1998-2002) remains the dominant figure in Marauders high jump history. The six-time All-American still has his name etched in the school record books for top indoor and outdoor marks.
The native of Minot, ND, made an immediate impact on the Marauders program, earning NAIA All-American status as a freshman in 1998 at the outdoor championships. Yates followed up with an even better sophomore season, garnering All-American honors at both the 1999 indoor and outdoor championships.
After leading the Marauders to the school's first ever men's track and field conference title in the final season of the North Dakota College Athletic Conference, Yates claimed the ultimate honor at the 2000 NAIA indoor championships. Clearing the bar at 7-1, Yates won the national individual title.
The team captain in 2002, Yates wrapped up his career with a Dakota Athletic Conference indoor individual title, setting a league record while helping the Marauders winning the team title. He would go on to place sixth at the NAIA indoor championships to snare All-American honors for a sixth time.
The son of Ross and Karla Yates, Shane graduated from U-Mary in 2002 with a degree in business management. A locomotive engineer for BNSF Railroad, Shane lives in Fargo, ND, with his wife, Amy, and their children Brayden, Callie and Riley.
